NASA’s Orion spacecraft launched successfully atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket Dec. 5 at 7:05 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Orion’s Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1), is the first flight test for NASA’s new deep space capsule and is a critical step on NASA's journey to Mars. The 4.5 hour flight is scheduled to conclude with the splashdown of Orion in the Pacific Ocean.

I love how it goes from loud, to dead silent as the craft enters space.

Can we please give NASA more funding? Thanks US Government.
  • This is an amazing achievement, even though I hear people saying, "it's already been done before."  Well, okay, yeah, it has, but now it has been done by a new generation of engineers on a tighter budget with an entirely different style of technology. . .with 1/3rd the number of employees involved as the Apollo launches. Space travel is amazing by all counts and in all periods of time, but making space travel more cost-effective is what will really push humanity forward.

4:10 Passing Mach 5, Makes you gaze in awe how quietly that looks but there some high speed going on.
  • It's an incredible thing, looking at the curve of our planet from there. Amazing.

All those little bits of light coming out of the thusters at 6:35 are so beautiful

EPIC. I am 18 and I watched shuttle launches when I was young. This was an awesome launch but I still miss the Shuttle.

Awesome video! Watching as it left the atmosphere and no longer being able to see fire from the engines was really cool.

i wish we had some more altitude and speed information. it would be cool to see a speedometer the whole way through

Many congratulations to all the people involved in this mass project who have brought Spaceship Orion to life on it's first historic test flight! Happy to be on your Microchip! Best regards. Andrew Jacklin. Great Britain. Here's to a journey of expectations, may godspeed be with you and your future missions to that dusty red planet!
