I showed this video to my father and it was the first time in my life I saw him tear up. He said he’s never been as touched by a song as this one. Just goes to show how strong Marina’s lyrics are.

I understand the pessimism in the comment section, but also I think people need to see the hope in this song. it's not all about the awful bits of humanity, it shows the good in us too. it shows clips of rocket launches, of wonderful people protesting for change, of people laughing and enjoying themselves. It's a good song not because it rags on how awful humanity is, but because it recognises every dimension of humanity, the good, the bad, the joy and the pain and everything in between.

Small detail idk if many people noticed, but I love how she refers to God with a singular "they" in the line: "if there is a God, theyll know how hard it is to be human" If there is a God, in any way, they're not a man with a beard on a cloud. They're something we cannot comprehend. A multi dimensional phenomenom. They would transcend our idea of male and female, our idea of singular and plural. They'd be Everything. One, yet divided. Us, yet it's own manifestation of reality. Male, female, neutral, a secret third thing and everything in between. What pronoun captures that essence better than they? Both singular and plural. Both male, female and neutral.

I heard "To Be Human" for the first time 2 years ago, and I was crying so hard because the lyrics are so soulfully melancholic, and beautifully genuine. It helps me cope with the anguish of being a human being in this turbulent world, a world that is both beautiful and ugly. Humanity. Humanity. Humanity. Idk what to do anymore but this song is a masterpiece and oddly motivates me to keep going and keep fighting, no matter how painful and terrible life is, on earth. 🥺
