Secret Places: The Eternal Flame at Chestnut Ridge Park

Published 2018-11-28
The Eternal Flame Falls at Chestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park, NY

One of Western New York's local natural wonders, this hike is one of the "secret places" in the book of the same title by Bruce Kershner.

The flame is a natural gas jet behind a 25-foot waterfall. We hiked up Shale Creek in the winter to find the waterfall encased in ice and the Eternal Flame extinguished. We hiked to the Eternal Flame in winter when the falls iced over the grotto. Watch how we re-lit the Eternal Flame using cottonballs and petroleum jelly.

Very cool, It still works from the natural gas spring..when I was a kid in the 60's we went there a lot. We did climb the falls of course, back then it was a very unkown about place but I can see why they don't allow that nowadays. Thanks for posting this. I now live in Colorado but I miss all the chestnut, hemlock, and other disiduous trees we don't have here.

If this place had been in India, then the religious contractors of India would have declared it as the eternal light of a mother and made it the means of their business like Baba Amarnath. The specialty of this is that water keeps flowing here throughout the year and a flame keeps burning continuously under it. But the people there know that this incident happens due to the leakage of natural gas present in the earth. In India, for thousands of years, people have been made webkof in the name of religion, people were made mentally handicapped by calling science a magic miracle of God.
