Condensed Version of the Home Assistant Switchplate Setup Live Stream

Published 2019-01-03
The HA Switchplate build and setup instructions clipped down from 2 hrs to 25 min. I kept all the most important stuff. If there are details missing you can go back to the full Live Stream.

All the written instructions are available here:

There have been a couple of updates since this video, but the setup steps are the same.

Here is the list of the parts you need:
Nextion 2.4" LCD Touchscreen display
WeMos D1 Mini ESP8266 WiFi microcontroller
3D printed switch plate
3D printed rear cover
5V Power supply
PCB
Rubber grommet
Two M2 self-tapping 6MM screws (or just any 4-6mm M2 machine screws)
6" each of white and black 300V 18AWG stranded power cables (I just stripped some wire out of a power cord)
Four 20mm M2 flathead screws and four heat-set threaded inserts to fasten things together (feel free to improvise here)

You can also buy assembled units or just the PCB from Luma's Tindie store:

Excellent! The head with the T-shirt is better than the head alone. I can't thank you enough for all your useful videos. Keep it up👍
  • @Jefrysuko
THANK YOU! I love you man but not a fan of the live streams. I like the tutorial format which makes it easier to follow along and revisit as necessary.
  • Thanks for the video. Much easier to watch and understand how the switchplate works. One more project to add to the list. :)

This is awesome! I have been looking for something exactly like this. Kudos!
  • @cutstone
Thank you for this fine video. Very easy to follow, and make my display come alive in a very short time :-)

I am very tech savvy but admit I spent way too much time Googling for "FlashEZ" from one of your previous videos. I appreciated in a couple subsequent videos that you describe that FlashEZ isn't the real name, it's the name you use to refer to the FlashESP8266 tool which is far easier to find. :) Great videos! Thank you so much for them.

Woah! This is cool! Might be a good option to replace my Wink Relays or Lutron Connectd Bulb Remotes!
  • @IccoVN
The next step is to make video about sliders in HASP and how to control dimmers :)

Is the navigation across the bottom .... [scenes] [status] [lights] .... supposed to do anything out of the box? Or do we have to put in some automation of our own to make those buttons do something?
  • This is awesome. Man I love your straight to the point tutorials. The sonota tasmota was super easy!!
Really wanna try this but will need a 240v in power supply as I’m Uk based. Also using SmartThings with Alexa so I’ve not looked into home assistant and the integration of my setup with what you have done? Any thoughts would be great!! Thanks. Stu.

Hi, I know this is old video. I just bought me the Switchplate. I got it to work just fine but I have question about will the display reflect the status of the light. For examples, if I turn on the light on the HA or switch will it show the correct status on the switchplate display. So far mine does not work correctly.

Hello, where can I get all the parts for the HA Switchpplate? I like to use your link so you can get some credit.
  • @EsotericArctos
I think I would put a little terminal block on instead of the wire for the mains, but we do our wall plates a little differently here so that works better for our standards. I wonder if I can get one of these certified :)
  • @WhyIamBad
Thanks for the video guide. Is it possible to use a USB charger as 5V power supply just connected to the D1 mini? If I skip the IRM-03-5 powder part, is the PCB still working?
  • @BrianThomas
This is very very cool Dr Zzs. Question: Is there a way to change the LCD to an ePaper display instead? Since there isn't a lot of graphics this could make a well polished control display.
