How Old Are Your Ears ? Hearing Test

In the United States, more than 15% of the population has some degree of hearing loss affecting daily communication, making it the most common sensory disorder.

Although it is widely accepted that the audible area of a man ranges between about 20 Hz and 20 kHz, it is possible for young children to hear frequencies up to 22 khz.

THIS TEST ONLY GIVES AN APPROXIMATE AGE.

For a better result, the video must be watched in HD and you need to have good internet connection otherwise youtube decrease audio quality. The quality of your headphones (it is not necessarily the most expensive the best for this test) or loudspeaker can have an impact of several thousand Hz on the result. Apple seems to block frequencies from 16khz. You may also have an equalizer that removes high frequencies. You can also try on multiple devices. You will get a better result if you have not been confronted in the last 48 hours with a loud noise. Don't listen too loud. A low sound volume is sufficient, you can increase it slightly when you approach the area where you stop hearing.

Due to youtube compression the maximum frequency of this video is 20Khz. For results up to 22 Khz you can see : www.arealme.com/hearing-test/en/

Disclaimer: This test is not intended to serve as a substitute for a medical consultation.

A hearing test must be carried out with standard calibrated equipment. Moreover as pure-tone audiometry uses both air and bone conduction audiometry. In addition, a high frequency audiometry medical examination is in the range of 8KHz-16Khz, in our case we go beyond that.

People with hearing loss may have difficulty hearing certain frequencies. This attenuation is measured in DB (decibel) and must be measured with standardized equipment from a professional. Hearing loss can be temporary or irreversible.

Several factors can impact high frequency audiometry, exposure to noise, certain medications (ototoxic), infection (in children and young adults, generally reversible within 1 month, but can persist if recurrent infections of the ear) or simply earwax which obstructs the ear canal (the most common cause in the elderly)... but there is also a loss of sensitivity with age.

In this test we use the formula: age = 110 - frequency / 200 which gives an APPROXIMATE AGE

In the publication « Extended high-frequency audiometry in healthy adults with different age groups », they studied 162 people aged 21 to 70.

Subjects under 30 years old were totally responsive up to 16 kHz, and 52.2% could respond to 20 kHz. No responsiveness was recorded to 20 kHz in the 51 ~ 60 group and even to 18 kHz in the 61 ~ 70 group. And no apparent impact on verbal communication was observed due to high frequency hearing loss.

Human communication frequencies are 75 to 140 hertz (Hz) for men, 170 to 250 Hz for women, and 300 to 450 Hz for children. This test does not cover these frequencies.

It's the upper frequencies we lose first with age. So let's test at which frequency do you stop hearing sound.

What’s crazy is that my hearing is so good that I can still hear the high pitch after the video ended!
  • For anyone wondering, most headphones will stop at around the 13-15k hz range so don't worry if you are under 30 and think you have the hearing of a 50 yo
  • @Ali-vn9tz
Omg! I can hear the pitch all the way until the indicator popped out of the right hand side of my phone. I'm so keeping that little white thingy as a souvenir. Thanks.

Man, I didn't hear much past 13k, but I gotta tell you I sure drove my cat crazy with the higher frequencies. She had no idea where the sound was coming from.
  • Be wary of this test it depends also on the frequency range of your headphones. As a Audiophile. I test headsets against their claimed frequency response, no where even close. With a set of Apple earphones i could only get to 12.34Khz with my Sennheiser RS 175 I can hear to 14.6
  • @Yourlocalmess24
Wow, it just abruptly stopped at 30 and was immediately gone :0

I'm 17, and I didn't hear anything at 40. Well, according to some people, I also look like 40...

Just a heads up to anyone listening to this, but a lot of devices (including headphones) have a cap on the frequency in which they can play at. If you hear a sudden or steep cutoff, then there is a pretty good chance that your device simply cannot play frequencies at that high of a range.

I'm 63 with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. I can still hear to just under 12K Hz. This says I have the hearing of a 50 year old. Not too bad!
  • @desertjedi
I keep playing it at differing volume levels while not watching the screen and I continually get my exact true age. Even headphones gave me the same result.

I remember I was at around 18000 when I was 17 and I took the test again some years later was still around 18000. Now I am 23 and have the hearing ability of a 26 year old according to this and it makes sense, because I didn't really protect my ears but worked in an environment that is way too loud. SO PLEASE PROTECT YOUR HEARING

I’m 66 and my hearing age is 54, which I am pleased with. I thought after going to extremely loud concerts in the 70’s that I would be deaf! 😂
  • @AlisonBryen
I'm 38 and stopped hearing the frequency at age 40, which is quite a relief as I've blasted a lot of loud music through my headphones in my time.
  • 51 years of age, 44 years old of hearing. And it is not a mistake. You know, sound sensation prolonging... I tested it with interruptions, telegraphy like. Not all aged. I feel better. Thanks!
  • @TrashPanda5150
I'm 49 and I got to around hearing age 31 or 15.6khz. This makes sense to me. Though my eyesight is going downhill, my hearing has remained very strong. I have a good ear for musical tones and pitch, I can hear really faint air leaks on the trucks I work on or subtle noises differences with mechanical parts.
  • @tucker8071
Just a tip to hear it better if you got a bad result: pause and unpause the video quickly. It is easier for your ear to identify the "pulse".
  • I'm 13, and when I stopped hearing the voice, my hearing age was in the 30s or 40s. My hearing seems to have serious problems...
  • @TheClownfight
Checked out. Mine cut out just a year near my age. Fascinating
