Robert Twigger takes issue with well-worn career advice such as “follow your passion” or the “10,000 Hours Rule”. Robert argues that most successful people, including winners of the Nobel Prize, develop multiple areas of expertise typically with investments much shorter than 10,000 hours. In his talk, Robert will guide us on how to learn any 'micro' skill quickly and why this approach works.
Follow Robert on @roberttwigger In this age of busyness and cyber distraction, it’s rare for people to take the time to learn, improve and perfect their craft – let alone having more than one. Robert Twigger in an exception, a true polymath who has written novels, poetry, has taught English abroad while learning martial arts, and has been on crazy expeditions all over the world.

He’s the author of 13 books, including his 2017 ‘Micromastery’, a guide on how to become fast learners, spot creative opportunities and ultimately boost our happiness. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm a bass player and I'm at7,080 hours of practice, and I'm just getting good to feel it. They say 8000 is good and 10000 great and so far it's on par. After 6600 hours advancement started increasing rapidly and if this keeps up over the next 1000 hours I should reach good by then. I practice 16 to 20 hours a week.
  • sum : it doesn’t matter how often you practice, it’s matters how you practice. Most masters have learned the ‘micro-skill’ of their discipline. They learned it for the fun of being to able to say ‘I’ve learned that!’ There are also ‘entries’ to the micro-skills, for example holding your hand in a certain way to draw a better circle.

I get his point. Getting to learn something can be challenging because of the boring instructions but his way of thinking is very smart because micro mastery makes a lot of sense. In my point of view, Micro mastery is when finding a simpler way of learning something than the traditional. And this doesn't require 10k hours or spending a lot of money for education but finding a simple way and practicing it every week or day whatever it makes learning better and more than I thought. I tried to find that recently and Im making progress

This video is changing my approach to learning forever. His emphasis on how we learn as children by doing and not by reading has opened my eyes to consider a more practical oriented approach to learning. He also encourages us to learn by having fun or getting interest in whatever we are learning by approaching it like how kids learn by experimenting. I cant thank you enough. I am grateful.

Of course there are fun microcosms of the whole subject that you can meet along the way of mastering it. But the problem is that usually it becomes less and less fun as you dive deeper into it, untill you reach an advanced level, where you really start enjoying what you can do... Only the best teachers are able to give the students some fun bits scattered all along the learning curve...
  • They said it wrong. It's 10000 hrs to become world class in a field or skill.
  • Microcosm of science is Mathematics . That's why people good at maths are good at physics and other sciences . I understood it after my college life was over
  • I'm sure it took me 10,000 hours of playing Yu-Gi-Oh throughout the years to fully master it, and even when new formats, and rules get placed, I found that using Lightsworns are the best way to go, and I never stopped with that deck when playing in ranks.

The goal of this video is to enjoy learning and be proud of your achievements even if you think they are little the fact they are not because you are achieving something .you in the past you were not, like he said master how to enjoy learning and if you don’t you will not learn anything , small steps with a lot of love can make a huge difference in your life which would lead you to hapiness.

I think this type of learning is quite compatible with current internet based self study culture.

Pretty good and inspiring speech. When you feel that you can quickly use what you have learnt and start creatively experimenting, it will feel more meaningful. It is a way of directing your focus from some external pressure "I have to become an expert and study for year" to internal motivation where you curiosity is the driving force.
