0:19 "Ignorant and terrified inhabitants..." Damn, that's kinda harsh, Mr. Dramatic-Tone Narrator.
  • @Funeeman
They got lucky as hell at Hastings. If Harald Hardrada had not turned up with his flimsy claim to be King of England the Norman's would have been been annihilated .

The original name of this documentary is The History Makers; William the Conqueror. The series are so old, can't even find it online but one can see that it's al least 20 years old. Truly Medieval documentaries.

For anyone old enough..I thoroughly and fiercely recommend 'Catweazle' starring Geoffrey Bayldon ...sort of Norman videos.
  • Rollo was heard to ask "who the HECK is this Rolf guy stealing MY thunder"?
  • My family the de Clare which was de Brionne in Normandy is a part of this great history.
  • This is WONDERFUL!! And, the videos are fantastic! I didn't even know they had cameras back then.
  • Who is the guy with the adorable accent and glasses that explains everything? I just love him!

Was nice to discover a few years ago, one of my ancestors fought with and was awarded land by William in the Conquest and I can trace ancestry back to Charlemagne and his 3rd wife. What history, plus I'm half Danish paternally, so lots of cross DNA here.
  • Fulcrums of history are where ancestors pile up. Jacobite rebellion, Tudor revolution, and I know a half dozen from 1066.
  • For anyone interested, I fiercely recommend Schwerpunkt's Norman history videos

History repeated itself with the native Americans, when the ability to fight on horseback allowed the Comanche to dominate the landscape against other tribes who dismounted their horses to fight on foot, in battle…according to “Empire of the Summer Moon”

Yeah rolf was a nickname or some other name. His actual name was rollo. He was a brother of one of the famous vikings. He's the one described in the video as given title duke of normandy.

He also banned hermitages to take the land. Many used to leave land to the church for use by hermits. It’s worth looking at the quote of the last Anglo Saxon bishop of Durham who declared the pope anathema
