The January 2024 transfer window was bizarrely quiet.

Premier League clubs spent just £100m, which was more than eight-times less than in the winter of 2023. Why?

Where have all the transfers gone?

Nick Miller writes, Philippe Fenner illustrates.

Pretty sure most of them are still at Chelsea
  • @L.Drizzle
Clubs don't think the only solution to their problems is buying another player. They also think sacking the manager fixes everything.
  • I’m shocked with how reserved Chelsea has been this season, I expect their terrible spending habits were going to continue

Wolves winter transfers last season almost definitely saved them from Relegation.

I hope this starts deflating transfers. Recent transfer spending has been crazy. Any first team player for a European team instantly costs around 80-100mil. That's what Cristiano went for a decade or so ago. It can't keep continuing surely

For all of Daniel Levy’s faults, he sure has kept Tottenham’s financials under control and there is no danger of financial ruin.

I'm rather surprised why no one, not even The Athletic or Tifo, has ever mentioned one important FFP rule adjustment made due to COVID that has now affected PL clubs, including the drop in spending during recent 2-3 windows. There was a huge allowance given especially for wage bill YoY increase, and I believe many clubs took advantage of this - some of them like Everton lost that gamble and are now paying for the price for it.

I think the Winter break that's added this year contributes to this as well, almost no games played in january means teams aren't gonna get caught up on panic buying because of huge run of losees etc. a lot of teams only played 1 or 2 league matches in january and also have a lot of players not available due to international cups, excuses for possible bad form and no panic buying because of lack of games being played. Also side note, If a team is in deep trouble they will make the gamble no matter what, but this year with a set of weak promotion teams meant no relegation threats right now for most non promoted team further decreases their motivation to make a purchase or loan. Too many compounding reasons and the financial struggles made a quiet transfer window an unanimous decision across all teams

Video title reminds me of Jack Sparrow: Why is all the rum gone??!!

Perhaps clubs can look to their academies for breaking in young players more than simply filling gaps with expensive signings?
  • I know it's partly because clubs are being more sensible but also I think the prices for top players (which drag up prices for mid-level players, etc) are outlandish compared to the revenue most top clubs can generate. 9 figure amounts on a single player is insane - just takes one career ending tackle/injury, and can't get two or three players each year for that amount. Why clubs are investing in their academies I imagine

Glasgow Rangers signed 3 players this window and last 2 games thise players collected MOTM awards But the most important signing is the manager, i don't understand why they go for relatively small fees. They can transform the whole freaking team!😮

Everton’s PSR breach has little to do with transfers and mostly comes down to the cost of building a football stadium during a pandemic. The addition of them in this video implies that they broke PSR due to transfers when that is simply not the case.

But some players fill in the gap that found after starting the tournament those make instant impact maybe for not long term
  • @GeoguessrFC
Bayern could’ve used a few transfers
  • @paulquaife7974
Brighton brought well this January, Barco for 8 million is an absolute bargin
  • @beneasler8868
Don't forget Liverpool also signed Luis Diaz in January and he was a huge reason for the quadruple push that season
