51 second improvement over the previous record.

I guess doing sigil 2 got me interested in doing some more uv-max runs for doom, so I figured I'd have a look at what I thought would be a really difficult run. However, after practicing a bit it was quite obvious that there are massive time saves available all over the place.

This is still not great, especially since I only spent 2 days practicing/routing with about 2 hours worth of attempts. I think a decent run would be a low 17:XX, wouldn't be surprised if someone put effort into this it goes below 17 minutes with a more refined route, my best with several saves was just barely under 17 minutes which is not good enough as mistakes always happens.

And no, it does not get 100% kills on E1M8. A lot easier with 200/200 and a rocket launcher, still not great odds, but definitely doable with a much slower run.

E1M1: IL record is 24 seconds now, not getting anywhere close to that here. If you haven't watched it then you need to do so, link here:    • Ultimate Doom Speedrun - E1M1 - UV-Ma...  

E1M2: The imp up the lift at the start is by far the most annoying thing here, everything else is very straightforward, just run and fire the chaingun. Quite a few mistakes here cost me several seconds.

E1M3: Again just chaingun everything, I save the rockets for later, but there might be some good places to use them here. Can't remember what my best time was on this map, but a second saved on the record with no rockets used is probably ok.

E1M9: A lot more rocket use by the exit up the stairs saves a lot of time here. Monsters wandering off is a big issue, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some better route for this map that can take care of both that and make it faster. Really happy with the time, think I've had 1:39 and maybe lower before, but there's a decent chance you lose a ton to something going wrong like the imp pillars or wandering monsters.

E1M4: Unreal how many missed shots I had on this level, horrible time. No idea how the other routes deal with monsters wandering off, so I just kill the ones that can become an issue. Also lots more chaingun use in the maze instead of rockets, rockets are just not effective enough there imo.

E1M5: Lots of things went wrong so I'm pretty sure there's lots of time to be saved here. Not a great start, but not too horrible, but then yellow key door happened where the shotgunner got in my way and messed up everything. Now I'm super low on health and completely waste that central barrel which could have done a ton of damage. Then I get screwed over by the pinky while I'm on the lift, but thankfully he got into my line of sight without forcing me to jump down. Completely messed up my route for the next part with the pinkies, but overall the time didn't seem that bad so far, no idea. Anyways I ran out of bullets by the end, but the shotgun did the job well enough and the rockets at the exit were horrible.

E1M6: I leave everything behind at red key area and come back for clean up later with rocket launcher. Still a bit low on bullet ammo, but doesn't cost me too much time. At least it went smoothly enough for the next parts. Ran out of bullets again at the exit, just lost too much time in several places which makes this a bad time.

E1M7: No missing monsters here so that's great, I try to make sure that doesn't happen, but it's not always possible. By the exit I use only 1 rocket and save the rest for the next map, I doubt using a lot of rockets here is worth it, but I dunno, 26 seconds behind the IL so no doubt it could be better, can't recall my best time.

E1M8: Got lucky with most of the pinkies dying quickly, but didn't manage my rockets well so it cost me a few seconds. I have a lot more rockets than the previous record so I save a lot of time here, but still I should have been about 5 seconds faster if things went smoothly.

Anyways happy holidays, not sure if I will look into the rest of the episodes next year. Had some other things in mind, but they take more effort, so hopefully something more interesting next year.

  • This is just insane... this game is 30 years old. The fact that you still somehow manage to beat UV-max records on it is mind blowing. This run looks as if Doom guy was John Wick.

    I was half expecting an attempt to 100% kills on E1M8, but i understand that the stars have to align JUST right to do it.

    Despite you not viewing this as an ideal run, this still had some of the smoothest exploding barrel work I've ever seen.

    Coincident's 19:19 record from 2020 is what brought me to the Doom community. He introduced me to the UV-Max category, and I thought his meticulous approach and zeal made him set a record that would stand for a very long time. However, it has been beaten thrice since and the record was brought down to 18:40. The fact that you now casually take 51 seconds off of that, whilst still missing shots and bumping against walls, is just mind-boggling. You never cease to amaze me.

    Nice one, ZM! What's so satisfying about UV Max runs is to assemble lots of monsters into one place to blast them away with rockets. Also, 9:25 is so juicy :D
