What REALLY happened to Patrick Childress Sailing on SV Brick House!?!? (#66)

Published 2020-06-19
Whats the REAL story behind Patrick Childress, sailing the last storm of his life? Whats the future for his wife and first mate Rebecca Childress onboard their 1976 Valiant 40, Brick House, after a near circumnavigation, and the Patrick Childress Sailing Channel here on YouTube?
Patrick and Rebecca Childress have been sailing around the world for 13 years, and recently sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape of storms, to Hout Bay, and then to one of Patrick Childress' most remembered places in the world, Cape Town, where he had visited nearly 40 years ago on his first circumnavigation aboard Juggernaut, a Catalina 27. He had spoken fondly about the Royal Cape Yacht Club for a decade before arriving here. Its interesting that Cape Town turned out to be his final resting place. Rebecca Childress now decides where her liveaboard sailing life will lead her, what to do about her liveaboard home of 25+ years, Brick House, and explains the trauma of getting very sick in a foreign country, and then losing her captain in Cape Town, South Africa.

Special Thanks to Paper Boat Project, Sailing Uma , The OKelley's, Follow the Boat and other sailing channels who helped spread the word of the fundraiser so kindly started by Leanne Coffman and Matt Ray to pay for what health insurance refused to pay. There will be full details of the day by day experience on my blog soon. (sign up below)

  • Wow guys..the video is going on a week now and I just can’t keep up with the comments, at all. I apologize, and I will read and respond SOMEDAY. Life, taking care of the boat, myself, this channel...has become so overwhelming that I have to drop doing something, for now. I am going to try to answer these comments for 30 minutes per day, but then I just can’t do any more and get everything in life done. Please keep commenting, and I will get to them one of these days. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!! ALSO if you are trying to contact me to crew.....this is really what I need: 1. Offshore sailing experience 2. You can share half the expenses, which I estimate to be $1000-$1500 per month. 3. 6 month to 1 year commitment, more better, if we get along well 4. Mature and peaceful Not sure on destinations yet...Atlantic probably....contact me at www.whereisbrickhouse.com/

I'm a night nurse for 25+ years and I can tell you WITHOUT A DOUBT that Patrick heard every word you said and gave you a sign of recognition with the glance of his eyes. I will even say he held on and WAITED for you to come to the hospital. He would not leave without you there. God Bless you and Patrick.

My wife's name was Ieta. She left here in 2007.Every night, when it is time to sleep for the night, I have a feeling of surprise that she is not here, and activly glance around to find her.. It;s not a sad or lonely feeling - just a surprise that she is not here. Were married the day before Christmas in 1953 and she looked out for me as long as she could. She fell in the bathroom and breast cancer broke out in her body. i feel that she whipped the cancer but that their "cure" attempts finally took her away l'll just hang around here....If I wasn't already almost 86 and covid wasn't around the corner, I would like to tarvel along - but I guess I will just hang around here as long as I can( as she comes by to see me quite often in my dreams.
  • Stumbled on this video by accident... and it hit me luke a hammer. When i lived my sailing dream I met my to-be wife in St Maarten.. her dream was a house on Crete, at the beach. I gave away my boat, and moved with her to Crete, and together we build the house and studios to rent. That was 13 years ago, and we have lived her dream, until she died suddenly 5 months ago. All familiar, holding her in my arms while she slowly slipped away. Now, 5 months later, I still don't know what to do. I continue the life we shared, trying to cope with covid, trying to cope... Anyway, all I can say is: don't rush it. For me, trying to continue the life we had before is a means to find out whether i can enjoy this life without my wife, or not. I still don't know, but i sure am happy that I did not make any radical changes yet.

My friend, I am a hospice nurse. He knew You were there, he heard everything you said, an that was his way of saying goodbye. I hope and wish the peace that passes all understanding this time of grief. But, and I assure you, he was communicating his last farewell to you. He will always be with you in your heart. Cherish the memories of your time together, Regards, A stranger that cares
  • Long medical background, he fought to tell you for the last time that you are the center of his world. He was fighting death to tell you he loved you. My heart is broken as I watched this video. I pray you are united with Patrick in our Fathers time. God bless and keep you dear sister.

Dr. Here. Him looking at you and a tear coming out was voluntary response. In essence, he wanted to communicate and it seems he did.

Yes darling dear he was looking at you. I used to be a nurse and have seen a lot of souls leave this world. This is a legitimate experience. My heart goes out to you 💔. God bless you and be well and cry as much as you need.
  • @jean6756
hi Rebecca, very sad to hear that Patrick passed away. You both were a great inspiration for all sailors all over the world, your experiences translated in your movies mean a lot to all of us. I wish you all the strength to continue your passion of sailing with Patrick as your guardian angel. All the best ! Jean
  • @guydepoorter
Rebecca, i've been watching many sailing youtubers, first time i had tears from a real life story. Your partner was exceptional in many ways, but, the good news is, you too. Leave the boat for a few weeks, go and see the world and friends ( meet my family, you have a place to stay in Belgium ) and soon you'll be wanting to go back on the boat, because its the only right place for you to start new adventures. Shouldnt be a problem to find someone joining you for any story. Good luck, you can make it again. Cheers.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die.
  • @gordo43
The counselling I got was, "don't let one tragedy turn into two." Follow your heart.
  • @TropicShade
Catching up on my sailing videos and just learned of your loss. Wow. Sending you my deepest condolences and thoughts from Guam. Fair winds and following seas forever!
