The Sad Reason Camilo Received The Gift Of Shapeshifting | The Reality Behind Disney Encanto’s Gifts

Despite only having a few lines throughout Encanto, Camillo Madrigal was arguably the funniest character in the movie and probably the most entertaining member of his family. His powers to shapeshift into anyone that he could imagine was not only an aid to his comedic genius but may have even been the result of it. And in this case, Camillo may have been asking himself, “Who’s the real me?” You see, like the rest of his magical family, Camillo’s powers likely manifested themselves as an extension of one of his biggest personality traits. Sadly for him though, it seems like it may have been stemming from a deep dark fear that not a lot of fans even realized Camillo faced.

The original ending of the movie was supposed to be about Camilo finding out who his true self is but then Disney decided that the ending had to be about Mirabel so the original ending was scrapped and we got the ending that we saw in the movie instead

If that town had a therapist they could retire comfortably after counselling The Madrigals.

I think Camilo both had the ability to entertain people and has an identity crisis himself. The two older grandchildren Isabella and Dolores were both doted on until Luisa came, then Camilo and Mirabel. As we can see the grandchildren's order by age and the way Abuela treats every child, we can see that before they turned five years old, they were all doted on (this is evident in the opening scene) but there's more emphasis on Isabella as she is Abuela's lookalike when she was younger. Now then, Camilo may have jumped into every hobby/skill/trait/ability he can learn and in turn used that switching to entertain and help his relatives. Also, he may have thought of differentiating himself with his older sister and his older cousins that's why he kept switching abilities. In time, that may have given him an identity crisis though as a child. His crisis may have also pushed him to get used to his shapeshifting but as a teen, I think he is still in that zone where he's exploring what he can do and what he wants in his life. Even Isabella have not reached the full potential of her power if not for Mirabel.

I think that Camilo was any teenager trying to find there way in life he probably only shapeshifted so that we he could impress his parents Pepa and Felix.

I didn't suffer from middle child syndrome because I'm only my father's middle child. Our older half-sister and half-brother didn't live with us, so I grew up as the eldest. Mom's middle child was her only son.

I hope we get to see more of Camilo in Encanto 2 cuz we barley got to see him in the first
  • Personally, I think the explanation of Camilo's gift is simultaneously a lot simpler, yet also a lot deeper. Casita itself is very much a member of the family that looks after the others just as much as any other, maybe even more so because of Abuela's tendency to be emotionally distant and passively abusive. It saw how all of the second-gen Madrigals were struggling under the constant pressure Abuela put them under, and with the third-gen Madrigals, tried to be more merciful with the gifts given to them. Casita's first try was with Mirabel, whom it tried to spare from that pressure completely by giving her no gift at all. But that backfired tremendously and instead resulted in her becoming Abuela's scapegoat and emotional punching bag. So when it was Camilo's turn, Casita did give him a gift. And there are two possible motivations one might consider Casita to have had in giving it to him. The first was to possibly have made it impossible for his gift to become his identity by having his gift to quite literally be to be any identity. If that's the case, it also failed because Abuela found a use for him anyway. The other was for Camilo to let all of the other Madrigals see themselves the way others see them, and more critically, as they are as people -- the way they speak, act and emote -- and not in terms of their gifts. But again, this didn't work because Abuela just put him to work as the entertainer, and whatever deeper meaning might have been gleaned from his impersonations went over their heads. Finally, Antonio was given the gift to speak to animals. Which might have been just a ploy to ensure that there was at least one other Madrigal who knew (by way of the rats) that Bruno was still with the family (the other being Dolores), but I think was more likely intended for the animals to be Antonio's extended family -- a whole host of animals who might be completely ignorant of the fact that Antonio's ability to speak with them is unusual and who value him exclusively as a person. Basically, it's my feeling that Casita was trying, harder and harder, to let the next generation of Madrigals feel free of burdens. But it never worked, until finally, after so many years of Abuela making Casita feel less like a home and more like a prison, it finally set the whole family free in one drastic last resort: By ending its own existence. Yup. I'm suggesting Casita committed suicide.

I don't think he could have possibly had a middle child syndrome. Antonio couldn't have come around until he was around 10:00 which would be way after his gifting

What was the reason Dolores got hearing powers

I always wondered why they were given their magical gifts at age five. Now, after watching this theory, I wonder what their magical gifts would have been if they had waited till they were older and their personalities were fully developed.

I didn't like or dislike his character, but I didn't like that he was the only son of the family. I would have preferred Luisa to have been the son of the family facing the expectation of being the dependable stoic that I think so many men experience.
