They occur when the air near the ground is significantly hotter than the air above it, causing light rays to bend upwards. This bending of light can create the illusion of water or reflective surfaces on the ground. Inferior mirages often appear as a shimmering pool of water or a distorted reflection of the sky, making it seem as though there is water on the ground when, in reality, there is none.

Superior mirages: These mirages occur when there is a layer of cold air close to the ground with warmer air above it. In superior mirages, light rays are bent downwards towards the colder, denser air, creating the illusion of objects or landscapes appearing higher than they actually are. Superior mirages are less common in deserts but can sometimes occur over icy surfaces or cold bodies of water.

Desert mirages have fascinated and mystified travelers for centuries, often leading to stories of lost oases or hidden treasures.
