Bouncing off the top of the wall for a ground rule double has happened to me before. I was also very confused.

To judge the distance of a ball in real life.. a camera sees the ball hit, calculates launch angle and speed off the bat.. and then a computer tells them how far it would go fast enough for it to be displayed on tv. It’s pretty cool actually.
