  • Thanks for sharing this. When I was researching a good build for 2D animation and After Effects, there were basically no videos on what parts to pick. Always insightful to watch your videos.
  • @Eden_GT
Because people stare at me in horror when I tell them I work on a mid-range laptop. :elgato:
  • @worldisending
John is the man! He has helped me so much with all my hardware.
  • @Geloyart
I thought I just rendered something on the background with the sound effect you added there. Good one!
  • @aelearn
Congratulations on upgrading your machine. Great event in our galaxy!
  • @francokarlo
Good! now I know what to parts to focus on and not burning money. Thank You!

John is officially the nicest, most helpful human in the biz! He should be nominated for Australian of the year.
  • @westfield90
Wow awesome video. Had no idea about cpu cores.
  • @DeanRockne
Having a dedicated m.2 SSD as an AE media cache is a huge help. I set aside over 400gb for it. It's especially nice when you're bouncing between multiple projects.
  • @DeathlyTilt
I recently added 32 gigs of ram to the 16 I already had for a total of 48, and it’s crazy to see the performance difference. I’m not sure how I ever did anything before. I thought 48 would be overkill but I’m constantly using 40+ while in AE
  • This is a great video and definitely really helpful! ***A note to anyone out there who wants to get into motion graphics but is on a tight budget***: I used an M1 Mac Mini - the absolute base model which can be purchased for ~$600 - and did 2d motion graphics/explainer videos professionally and didn't really have any headaches at all and it handled it surprisingly well - especially after Adobe started rolling out the Apple Silicon optimized apps*! The only reason I stopped is because my company bought me a beastly computer and I would rather keep my work stuff and personal stuff separate anyways. *The last time I used the silicon Ae, FX Console didn't work. They may have fixed this by now, but if you use that it may be worth trying out the older, pre-silicon AE to see if that works enough for you.

One thing to consider nowadays regarding GPUs is After Effects' multi-frame rendering option. It gobbles up VRAM, even my 3080 can't keep up if I add something as simple as Red Giant's Optical Glow on an animation.
  • Ben, have you seen Pwnishers community 3d render challenges? You should run a similar community motion graphics challenge.
  • Thanks greatly for this informative video. I now know where to start from with my laptop and get the moolah once I start earning big like you in few years. Thanks once again, Ben (10) 👍❤️.
  • Thanks for the video, i am looking for a pc at the moment.
  • Keeping your system disk and project files disk separate was always the mantra, since the 1990s. When people started working on laptops (in particular MacBooks) and self-contained, smaller computers like iMacs, I was surprised to see how people seemed to begin ignoring that credo. So, it was nice to hear confirmation that I wasn't mad for thinking it should still be the same. Interesting information.
