In War Thunder, the British Swingfire is a peculiar tank destroyer with agile anti-tank guided missiles. I actually enjoy using it a fair amount, especially since Gaijin nerfed the other ATGM carriers.

"Britain makes something bad, asked to leave x" is definitely a good series

I cannot recall the story 100% but at my job there is an ex-Striker gunner from the Belgian army. And the very very first time he was gonna fire the thing, the main motor didnt ignite so it just popped out and fell 25 meters in front of them & he was so dissapointed because he was so looking forward to firing the damn thing

In real life, almost all vehicles equipped with that launcher had a remote targeting sight and 50-100m of cord. You were supposed to leave the vehicle in a deep defilade or open courtyard behind buildings while you hid in foliage or a building. If done right, it was also possible to park it down side streets since the missile could make 90° turns.
  • The bovington tank museum piece on this vehicle is honestly incredible, the ability to dismount the sighting system away from the launcher and use it at a safe distance is so cool in my opinion. It's also able to maneuver the missile almost 90 degrees immediately after launch!

I actually don't think the Swingfire is that bad, I just like the title scheme Also if you guys could turn on notifications that would help a lot, YT is being really weird about showing new uploads to subs

This thing is actually one of my favourite vehicles in the British tree, the sight is super easy to use on nearly any map and can stick out over crates and such

1:55 is INCREDIBLY relatable. I'm like 1.5k hours in and I find myself having zero clue how to play the sides of the map that I don't reflexively spawn in. They only ever see action when I'm playing with a friend. Abandoned Factory A? Never heard of her.
  • Note: Swingfire with the la royale update got it's deadzone significantly reduced, it's also the ONLY atgm in the game that has it's old FM thus being very stable and agile as it's designed to be very agile(thrust vectoring atgm btw)
  • The swingfire used to be a lot worse, idk when they fixed it but it couldn't kill shit missiles with half the TNT equivalent could oneshot. I think one of the reasons why it wasnt hit as hard by the atgm nerf is because it fires the missiles upwards so there is less chance of them just randomly slamming into the ground.

This does highlight a few things I've been saying about ATGMs, even before the ATGM agility change, they were ultimately always more an area denial weapon than something like a cannon at the same BR. Especially for higher BR ones. I could take out the VAB Mephisto, and risk facing APS/IRCM that literally nullifies it entirely, or I could take out an AMX-10RC or an AMX-30 with LRF/Thermals/APFSDS.

The sight distance control also works for the QN906. elevating the launcher means its more likely to see people behind cover and Ive had pretty good success with it
  • Play the Object 685, it’s a light tank so it will be perfect for you, has a very nice APHE round, dart round for more armored targets, and sits pretty good right at 8.7. My boy doesn’t get enough love
  • Next up: Britain Makes Worst Light Ta...oh wait there's still no light tank line after 8 years.
  • @Momomaster25
The swingfire is surprisingly good, just a shame it's not MCLOS (like IRL) with a SACLOS upgrade. I am fairly certain the sight periscope should have significantly more depression, but snail doesn't care about anything british enough to google simple stats. Another niche tank with surprisingly solid performance is the CA Lorraine, really want to see it played.

one of the recent updates buffed the swingfire missile's initial turn and made it so much more usable, i used to have a minimum distance of like 300m in both this and the striker. the missile's name is literally because of the high-g turns it makes upon leaving the tube and it couldnt do it properly
  • @garmfield2977
3:18 the decision to use a dodgeball sound effect for the atgm was hilarious
  • The Canaervon being unbothered is the only reason I play it. Everyone thinks you have no armor but you actually have quite a bit
  • @juusolatva
I did find the Striker that also uses Swingfires quite fun to play at times with its thermal sight, although due to the proliferation of better thermals around its battle rating it's not as fun anymore. it's worth mentioning that the sight placement on Striker is worse than on Swingfire, but the thermal sight can somewhat compensate for that.
  • Spookston is canonically the father of those missles now. He is such a good father he encourages them 🙂. Great job Spookie.
