1:26 I actually learned about this a few days ago. So apparently we breathe in what was once considered to be a waste product. Way back when life was first starting, the Earths atmosphere was mainly composed of carbon dioxide. As a result, organisms consumed carbon dioxide and released oxygen as a waste product. However, due to cyanobacteria, large amounts of oxygen began to accumulate in the atmosphere until the Earth’s atmosphere became dominated by oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. This was known as the Great Oxidation Event. As a result, organisms started consuming oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. We literally breathe in what was considered poison by our ancestors.

One thing you’re missing Matpat on how plants use nitrogen is that nitrogen in the atmosphere is in the wrong form for them to use. Nitrogen has to be combined or “fixed” with oxygen as NO2 (s) or form NH3/NH4 to be usable.
