First Burn (Hamilton) 【covered by Anna】
The first time I heard First Burn I immediately jived with it. I’m sure we all know I’m a fan of Hamilton (and a lot of you lovely folks are too!) and I knew I had to cover it asap!

From a personal perspective, I really loved the way this version captured Eliza’s character. Although the album version of Burn better suits the story (in my opinion), I absolutely LOVED the aggressiveness and anger that came with this. It provided a different side of Eliza and I have no complaints about it!

One thing that was a bit weird though was recording harmonies to a solo broadway song. It threw me for a bit of a loop. I tried to keep them to a minimum because sounded so out of place to me. This song is very pop-y, but the arrangement I used reminded me of broadway so I feel this weird disconnect between my cover and the actual release. Because of that, I sang it more from a place of broadway, rather than a pop single. If there is a full orchestrated instrumental of First Burn out in the next little while, I will 100% preform and re-record it accurately to the release! Either way, please let me know how you felt!

Hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll see you Saturday!

________
lyrics:

I saved every letter you wrote me
From the moment I saw you
I knew you were mine
You said you were mine
I thought you were mine

Do you know what Angelica said
When I told her what you'd done?
She said "You have married an Icarus
He has flown too close to the sun"

Don't take another step in my direction
I can't be trusted around you
Don't think you can talk your way
Into my arms, into my arms

I'm burning the letters you wrote me
You can stand over there if you want
I don't know who you are
I have so much to learn
I'm re-reading your letters
And watching them burn (burn)

I'm watching them burn (burn)

You published the letters she wrote to you
You told the whole world
How you brought this girl into our bed
In clearing your name, you have ruined our lives

Heaven forbid someone whisper
"He's part of some scheme"

Your enemy whispers
So you have to scream

I know about whispers
I see how you look at my sister

Don't
I'm not naive
I have seen women around you
Don't
Think I don't see
How they fall for your charms
All your charms

I'm erasing myself from the narrative
Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted
When you broke her heart
You have thrown it all away
Stand back, watch it burn
Just watch it all burn

And when the time comes
Explain to the children
The pain and embarrassment
You put their mother through
When will you learn

That they are your legacy?
We are your legacy

If you thought you were mine (mine, mine)
Don't

‘I’ve seen how you look at my sister’ ... she didn’t just burn letters
  • “I see how you look at my sister” and “Explain to the children”. Maaaan those lines were so sad.

I feel like Burn was how she portrayed herself on the outside. Dignified, strong, refusing to let her anger show in front of a world that doesnt to see her break. This one is how she felt in the inside. Likely when he tried to apologize as if his word ment shit in that moment.
  • i think the most heartbreaking part of this is the small "I thought that I could be enough" my HEART kudos to anna for adding that in such an amazing cover

"I thought that I could be enough." OKAY FIRST OF ALL-
  • OKAY SO MY “OH SHT ANNA DID THAT” FACE WAS SO PRICELESS WHEN I HEARD THE ENDING “I though that I could be enough” WAS SO PRICELESS

Me: Oh wow this is a really well done cover! It's such a sad, angry song and I think Anna captured that really well in this cover! I've never been one to cry when listening to music but this is certainly close! Anna: *casually adds in parts of Helpless in the background* Me: Oh. Oh no. Anna: "I thought that I could be enough." Me: N o.

Okay, that blending or whatever you did near the end when it hits the "Explain to the children the pain and embarrassment..." was SO FREAKING COOL
