This Cuphead Clone is Literally Unbeatable and Maybe Illegal?

Rubber Hose Rampage just came out, and it's a good ol' Cuphead-like! Except this one's different. It stars Mickey Mouse himself now that he and everyone from Steamboat Willie are in the public domain! But it also features some characters from other cartoons that may or may not be in the public domain. Either way I checked it out, and here's a nice edited down version of my playthrough where I had to cheat to beat the whole thing.

The developers really heard that Steamboat Willy was public domain and just assumed every animated character and asset from every era was public domain too.

This game makes Enchanted Portals look well-made and original
  • Fun fact: that lizard boss is traced from an animation that starts like a documentary, discussing how reptiles occasionally shed their skin, but then the lizard stands up and it turns into a striptease. I’m not joking

Finally, now we can make a Mickey Mouse game without getting sued by Disney Now we can make a Mickey Mouse game and get sued by everyone except Disney

This game honestly feels like one of those poorly made creepypasta about a cursed game. Only thing missing is the VHS filter and big bloody floating Micky.EXE head
  • I absolutely adore how the game over texts are no holds barred and brutal. Not clever, not in character, just cutthroat

With my knowledge of cartoons I recognize the strangest cameos in this game. For example, the lizard girl is ripped STRAIGHT from a Chuck Jones cartoon where a lizard does a strip tease. Mr. Hyde was ripped from an Australian cartoon adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The witch was from the Betty Boop short “Snow White,” and a lot of those ghosts are from the “Minnie the Moocher” short This game is a fever dream…

Alright, im gonna give the game credit. The ‘cheap shot’ involving santas present was genuinely funny and kinda makes me sad that they only cared very few times

For anyone who wants to suffer through this themselves; pressing 9 on your keyboard gives you infinite health and pretty much lets you one-shot every boss.
  • the first thing that happens when something becomes public domain is usually people flipping the script to make it into a horror movie where the character is a killer, but this is stupid to another level.

"Purky Pig" isn't actually Porky Pig. He's one of the three little pigs from the Looney Tunes short "Pigs in a Polka". The tambourine wolf you encounter is from the same short. That said, Warner Bros will absolutely come down hard on this game. If they didn’t even let Anthony's Animation Talk make his own commentaries for their shorts for free on his channel, there's no way ripping several of their characters for a monetized game is going to fly.

What a magnificent game. The one boss that walked back and forth was the highlight for me.

Surprisingly, there is one game mechanic in this game that I think is actually kind of unique and interesting: Pete showing up randomly to throw a projectile. It helps make things personal between the protagonist and antagonist. If they had used this idea in Cuphead, they could have made King Dice be the one to show up and sabotage the player, since in the game's story, Dice made a bet that Cuphead would fail to beat all the bosses and get their soul contracts. It would have to be a different character in the Delicious Last Course, though. Probably the jumping flame from Chef Saltbaker's battle, because that little a-hole is BY FAR the most evil being in the entire game.

I just realised Mickey's sprite is literally a traced version of Cupheads with Mickey's head
  • It feels like the dev heard of Mickey Mouse entering public domain and somehow interpreted that as "copyright as a concept has been repealed entirely" Which, you know, considering Disney's track record I don't blame someone thinking that that's what it would take for Mickey to become public domain. But still.
  • fun fact: in the original trailer for the game the objects that Porky throws during the second phase weren't mushrooms, THEY WERE THE SPONGEBOB JELLYFISH, THAT MEANS THEY COULD'VE GOTTEN VIACOM ON THEIR ASS TOO IF THEY DIDN'T CHANGE IT

  • I love that half of the bosses don't even attack you, they just dance around while other guy trows proyectiles everywhere... Also, not having any animation when the bosses are deffeated is such a good design decision, it doesn't make beating them feel extremely unrewarding, not at all (sarcasm)
