Lyrics:
I was cruel like a president
It was wrong but I ordered it
Lost some limbs in an accident
Playing god

At a table down at Edendale
Didn’t feel good wasn’t eating well
In the photo booth made me hate myself
What a slob

It’s hard now to imagine it
The currency was all counterfeit
Diana’s face was scattered to the mob
Expensive jokes and cheap thrills cost a lot

Zach’s staggering down Bleecker Street
The label asked for a meet and greet
I agreed reluctantly I couldn’t be alone

Signed a sleeve for a teenager
It felt just like a harbinger
I was shaking hands with the manicured
Worked my fingers to the bone

No you shouldn’t go home with the SoHo girl
Cause she only wants materials
And shouldn’t place bets on the New York Mets
Cause at best it’s hypothetical

Expensive seats in a field of dreams
U-turns in limousines
Got to get around the detour when it’s blocked
Bells and whistles, fancy cheap thrills cost a lot

No, you shouldn’t make noise with those Bay Ridge boys
When they’re drunk, man, it’s impossible
Secondhand amps and a bent up crash
The band sounds like an animal

Cheap seats and broken dreams
U-turns in limousines
Gotta kick in the door when it’s locked
Bells and whistles, cheap thrills cost a lot

  • I just hope Conor knows how much he is adored. There is a whole generation of us in our 30's and 40's that fell in love with him in our teens. I cant quite put my finger on it, but Conor is so damn special and important
  • @DrMetPhD
When Nate picks up a trumpet, you know it's going to be a great song
  • @clovs
Bright eyes saved my life. When I had no one, I had their music. I was never truly alone then. Thank you.
  • @MrPernell27
This band doesn’t get nearly as much credit, recognition and acclaim as they deserve. Easily one of the best bands of the last 25years. Connor is one of the very best songwriters America has ever produced. He’s in the same vein as Mr Dylan, Paul Simon and Willie nelson
  • @MissGhostface
Thank you for keeping me alive as a teen, happy to be here in my thirties! 💜✨
  • @meghannk8269
How many times can I fall in love with this band?!
  • @m0mb0y
Yeaaa, this is the anthem for when we take our meds and everything feels ok for a lil while.
  • I've been listening to Conor Oberst for more than 20 years; he's one of the greatest lyricists of his (or any) generation. There's something so amazing about his spirit and his vulnerability as an artist. He's indispensable.
  • @trickmeownom
this is so classically bright eyes I LOVE IT SO MUCH
  • @johnes
I am 8 years old and I loved this band since the womb
  • @zachalessi8438
One of the bands that made me love music. And each time a new song comes I get to relive that love all over again!
  • Wow. I will always be here cheering and singing word for word with Conor. The way his words follow us through different ages and decades makes them timeless.
  • @Sarlizgan
My dad was one of your biggest fans, and that's a compliment from a lifelong band lead guitarist. He died in 2015. Listening to your song was a moment to hang out with him. Big fan...second generation.
  • @edluacoles
Looks like everyone is having the same experience in the comments. Can’t believe I’m in my 30s and still able to enjoy this with the same lustre I did at 15. You guys always seem to time your albums perfectly - just when I needed it the most. Thank you. A million times thank you, for all the memories and life lessons your songs have tied themselves to. Hands down the best lyricist I’ve ever encountered, along with a band that always manage to find the perfect arrangements. I’m not sure if Bright Eyes fits my personality perfectly, or that Bright Eyes has shaped my personality over time, like water over a pebble. Your music has been there with me, every step of the way.
