"So, what did we learn today? I don't know, but I had fun building this." I love this energy.

I feel like a favela would 100% work with this game's engine. Now we just have to be able to build vertically....

Leave it to a Dutchman to put all the emphasis on the canals ;)

Townscaper's city design logic is really weird. And yet the results look far more natural than most city building systems. I guess it's because the grid is so... irregular. And while that's not quite how things work in the real world, real cities, especially older ones are built with topology in mind, and thus tend to also have irregularities. Even cities built on regular shapes like grids or circles tend to never be quite perfect and have weird irregularities. Contrast this to your average city building game (like say sim city or cities: skylines) which in many cases is built on a rectangular grid underneath. Even where there are things like hills and the like, the actual layout is constrained by the grid, and in many cases the construction doesn't account for terrain so much as it subtly modifies the underlying terrain. Townscaper doesn't have terrain, but it has an irregular grid and the buildings placed on that grid obey the implications of the shapes the grid has at any given location... Thus, while it's also not a realistic outcome, the shapes somehow end up looking more... Natural? More convincing somehow. Clearly not a real city, yet somehow more evocative of the quirks of a place that actually had to be built and is actually lived in... It's weird... And clever. XD
  • This game is like a virtual stress ball. I can have a shit day and have way too much on my mind but just clicking random shit in this game for ten minutes soothes all that.
  • I can't get over how similar the tiles are to skin cells - this is like watching an organ, tissue, a life form, growing in real time!

When you get a chance, go to Venice; it's such a beautiful city. Stay away from the tourist areas and explore the back streets. If the game allowed a slightly bigger map, you could have fit in the Arsenale in the south. Also it would be good to see the Ponte Rialto. But you definitely captured the spirit of the architecture of the city.

Holy shit man, your voice is so soothing that my depression just slipped away!
  • Well done Silvarret! I loved your first Townscaper video and bought it shortly after. I’ve made a couple of villages in it but mostly large palaces (a bit more of a challenge but worth it). Can’t wait to see what you do next!
  • @sacboy9
I'm glad to see you do another video of this game because I absolutely loved the last one!
  • This game is satisfying, and your voice is super calm, so it’s just a good vibe. Nice job!

Thank you for showcasing the garden paths at the start of the video! I was wondering how people had created them in other videos. Also! This whole video is a perfect helper for visualizing Venice in a more high fantasy sort of way; the D&D campaign that I'm currently working on is primarily set in a Venice-based city.

Loved this! Venice is such a beautiful city, hope you get to actually visit there someday! Even the failed attempt looked good too-- I think as you mentioned, you just needed to make some of the buildings a bit bigger, but otherwise I'd call that one a good attempt too :)
  • @alessiovidal
The effort you put for St Mark's Square is remarkable, yet very far :) as a Venetian (at heart at least, I left my hometown 5 years ago), after this video, I got the game (finally available for Mac too) and I am going to challenge you soon :P
