An oil producer hard hit by the slump in global prices, Venezuela has seen its economy gradually deteriorate over tghe past decade, with international economic sanctions aggravating the crisis. The late former president Hugo Chavez, in power from 1999 to 2013, wanted to make his country the home of "21st century socialism". But despite this promise to eradicate inequality, the most vulnerable seem in a more precarious situation than ever. However, some economic indicators have recently improved. To take stock of the situation, our team reports from Caracas, a capital where cameras are not always welcome.

Countries are poor because of corrupt politicians. Don't idolize them, they're public servants & treat them as such.
  • @rossb3454
In Venezuela, everybody is equally poor except the elitists and Maduro.

9:23 Any country where the people refer to their leader as "eternal supreme leader" is messed up beyond comprehension. I hope Venezuela recovers from this at some point.
  • The image of the hungry, aging abuela dressed in military fatigues would be comical if it wasn't so heartbreaking.

What a horrible way to live. The regression is sickening. Hearing people talk about Chavez like a deity while living in squalor created by his policies and corruption under Madero is unconscionable.
  • Many people in America complain about how things are, but don’t appreciate how fortunate they are. Even when inflation is high, it is nothing in comparison to many other places. If you really want to be successful in the US you can be. In other countries, you are at the mercy of whomever is in power.

Economic collapse despite massive oil reserves.... the true power of socialsim!
  • This is the first country I have witnessed who possess such massive petroleum resources yet almost everyone is starving. The sickening thing is that an good number of citizens there seem to have been brainwashed into supporting whatever their government does.

The truth is that wether it be capitalism or socialism, the wealthy elite will always get all the power and the resources. The difference is that in capitalism, the hardworking poor get a shot at upward mobility.

20% of the population have left Venezuela due to poverty and political corruption. Most likely the younger, strongest, most productive of the population has left. That country is dying.

Reminds me of my home country, Poland. Back in the early 70s, the communist government was allowed to take huge loans from the western European countries. While in the beginning the borrowed money brought improvements it quickly became apparent that without fundamental changes the rigid, centrally planned and inefficient economy was unable to produce a surplus needed to pay off the western loans. It was a socialist utopia, in a sense that everything looked great on a paper but in reality the economy was so inefficient that it was struggling to deliver even the most basic goods and services. By the end of the 70s and in the early 80s Polish economy was at the brink and it was almost impossible to hide the true state of affairs (despite government's propaganda trying really hard to conjure up an alternative reality). Poland in the early 80s was a really desperate place. Many Poles left the country to look for a better life abroad at that time. It's sad to see that Venezuelans are going through the same now.
  • Free housing in the USA appears the same. 2-3 generation live together. The poor usually have children young, limited education and lack of opportunities. A brand new house is good until maintenance is needed due to the crime and cost of fixing the home.

You wanted socialism, you got socialism. Enjoy it.

I wish all of this was in the American news more it's absolutely heart breaking

They voted for socialism and they got socialism..
  • What an inaccurate video. I lived their under Chavez. Yes he gave houses to the working classes mostly if they were party members. If they promoted the party they didnt get utility bills. His socialist revolution made his daughter the richest woman in Venezuela. The economy was already collapsing before Maduro came into power. He took foreign businesses destroying foreign investment. Inflation was already doubling every few months. Crime was out of control before Maduro.

What a joke and sadness at the same time. I am hungry but I love the guy who made me hungry?
