My First Fish Tank: Paradise\Neon Gourami- HELP!!!!!!

Published 2020-10-05
So I was in the pet store a few weeks back to get some supplies for our dogs (we have 4- it’s ridiculous!!) and I decided that my life just wasn’t exciting enough- so I bought some fish!!

I initially wanted the smallest tank possible, but a very knowledgeable guy at the local pet store convinced me that smaller was by far more hard than a bigger tank. Being that we’ve put two of our older dogs through surgery in the past 2 months, I figured I’d better not bring home some enormous tank- big mistake.

I’ve been to all of the local pet shops and they ALL have totally different information as to size of tank, size of fish, temperature, temperament, how many of what kind you can have and every other thing you can think of.... like the fact that a girl from the same shop who helped me initially, with the guy who seemed to really be an expert, sold me 4 fish that will reach 2-3 inches for a 10 gallon tank!!! Wtf?????? I don’t want to recreate Thunder Dome!!!

Here’s what I’ve learned in 3 weeks:

1.) buy a tank that is bigger than you think you want- I don’t even know what I’m doing and I can already tell bigger would have been waaaaay easier

2.) I’ve learned that in everything I do I go overboard and make purchases on impulse- when it comes to animals that can’t create and maintain their own environment, I feel like I should do more research in the future to figure out EXACTLY what and where I want something. The fish can’t choose.

3.) when you buy your tank- buy the sand, rocks and plants and install them before you add water. Duh!!!! Lol- I added the plants later. MISTAKE!!!

4.) get a set of long tongs to clear debris and reset plants- I just got a big reptile feeder, works perfect.

5.) I put Prime in the water for the initial water and add it to any extra water I add to tank to keep levels up. I’ve been told to use 1 1/2 times recommended dose as we have highly chlorinated water here. I also used Stability for 7 days. When I took the water in for first sample I got a PERFECT reading. Was proud of that :)

6.) let things sit. I have a tendency to over fix things. Like in gardening, we usually kill our plants with love- i.e., too much water not enough chill. I think the thing I learned most is to relax and let the ecosystem figure it out.

Ok, so.... next step is that I’m going to let this all sit for a couple more weeks, but will do some tests and make a change in water if needed.

Mostly, is just like your feedback! If I’ve done something wrong, please let me know and understand I only want the best for my animals.

Hope you enjoy the video- and please HELP!!!!!
