I can't say I ever confirmed this, but I absolutely recall people saying that the reason Simon cried and was so emotional during Josh's audition was because his mother had recently died, and the way Josh suggested that sometimes lyrics take on a slightly different meaning than intended due to personal circumstance and interpretation. Obviously, Simon "got it".

After seeing Simon breakdown after the children's hospice song that must have been one of the hardest things for him he met a with alot of them who are no longer with us. I shed a tear for those children and it takes alot for me to get emotional that song was absolutely so emotionally touching. ā¤ā¤ā¤
