I attended the 2022 Worldskills Welding Competition and put together a video to highlight what worldskills welding is all about.
I came away very inspired.
When you stop to consider how much effort goes into a competition like this with so many hours of practice and preparation by the competitor, educators, experts, and event organizers, its hard to understand why this story is not told more.
That's the reason for this video...to tell the story of worldskills welding and skillsUSA.

  • my son is a finalist in the uk world skills welding this week ,he's been a long time fan of your channel. fingers crossed
  • I've welded for over 20 years on and off, welded all day today, but I really didn't know what level things have reached. Very humbling and motivating to see, well done all.

At one point in time I considered myself a welder... These kids are completely exceptional. Absolutely brilliant work; I would hate to be a judge. Thanks Jody!
  • @joeo9980
Thanks Jody for coverage of these amazingly gifted welders and the window you give us into the wonderful world of welding!

My son is a welder at Newport News Shipbuilders where they build the Navy’s aircraft carriers and nuclear powered submarines. In a company with literally thousands of welders welding all day doing one-of-a kind stuff, of course extreme talent becomes apparent. My son said he was in a submarine and there was a guy welding threads onto a bolt. I mean it was a kind of rod that a welder was “manufacturing” into a bolt by creating the threads on it. I can’t even comprehend the level of skill for that.

Been a welder for 20 years …. and I still love seeing other peoples work…truly an art…cheers

I’ll never forget a discussion I had with a Pro NFL football player when he stated there’s a very fine line between the skills of a winner and loser in the final game. So it can be said for these welders. Incredibly beautiful welding to behold.

I completed in worldskills in 2011 at the NEC Birmingham England. Still have the drawings of the pressure vessel we done. Brought back the memories this video 😁
  • I competed at one of these competitions in Canada (Skills Canada vs World Skills). It was an insane experience. This is I'm assuming Worlds, so it wasn't exactly the same. But it was in this huge conference centre, masses of people came in to watch. I was making welds in those UV protection curtain "booths," while people were taking pictures and videos, stopped for lunch, and finished up. I ended up getting second place, and it was super close. The guy that beat me mustve ended up down there at Worlds. No grinding, no cutting, no stray arcs, the piece is graded on accuracy to the print and of course your welds. Cool experience, crazy stressful, though. Glad to have had that experience, I had an amazing teacher to whom I owe a lot of that success.

This was beyond amazing. You describe the "sickness" welders have in needing to inspect every weld they encounter. Perfectly accurate. Thank you for this video.
  • @videodistro
Thank you, Jody, for your time and mentorship. I'm not a welder by trade, though I've watched every one of your videos through the years and have used my welder for home repairs. I appreciate the effort and care you've shown to help those in and outside the industry!
  • @shable1436
I'm in awe at the levels, I mean this is space age welding techniques that not just only skyscrapers rely on thousands of ppl to live, but a new frontier
  • I took my tig 101 course right after that competition and was amazed by the skill of those young men and women. Japan and Korea had it down.
  • Man that is a lot of talent in one place. Just to be invited to this event would be an honor. Thank you for covering this Jody, I didn't know this was even a thing. I am so glad these young people have something like this, not everyone wants to be a rap star or some type of ball player. I for one think this takes more dedication than sports. But that may just be me.
  • @Synic08
I loved that cheering at the leak test…. Its basically saying, “all style points ignored, you can obviously weld with the best…”
  • @user-no6wd4rz4z
Worked 30+ years working in cryonics these boys have amazing careers ahead of themselves
  • @xaphan8581
These guys are on a different level. It’s mind boggling that people are this perfect at welding.
  • I'm only a hobbyist welder, but I always find myself inspecting others welds. One way of relaxation after work, as a tower crane operator, was to fire up my engine driven Thermal Arc portable welder to practice overhead and vertical welding. As I was doing this, one of the inspectors happened to be walking by and looked at my welds. He said, "I'd sign those off." Made my day.
  • @ICWeld
I really enjoyed that video. Its nice to see the behind the scenes action of what the competitors go through and the scrutiny involved in judging those weldments. Those are some incredibly talented welders. Very humbled by watching this. They are Good!!. Thanks for posting this Jody!😊😊👍👍

Didn’t even know such competitions existed. Surely the best welders would be out earning the money on the more exotic materials in construction. Power/nuclear/LNG - P 90, STT, 6G R
