  • I grew up as a mixed afro Latino not knowing very much Spanish(my mother’s mother tongue) and it has lead to much identity issues and insecurities but I find solace that someone can take that sentiment and turn it into a piece of art like liana has.
  • Like a voice reaching across time from the 1950s , using an old land line telephone. Magical.

this song is fantastic. my mother died when i was young and, idk, i always wonder what it would be like to have a mother for longer. would we go shopping together or hang out? what would she want me to be? would she be proud of who i am?
  • My great grandmother was a first generation Italian immigrant and the language has been mostly lost among my family or at least my mother and he siblings but I always feel like I’ve missed out on a majority of my culture. I still experience the food and emotional experiences but I’ve lost a part of myself and my family that I never really knew and i don’t know how to feel. It’s something i should know, but i don’t and it makes me feel idol

One two three four The street beneath my feet is paved with rows of gold Or so I’m told (So I’m told) (So I’m told) The sky before my eyes is never colored grey Or so they say I guess I’ve known the truth since I was pretty young That I never knew my mother’s mother tongue I’ll fake all of my words till they point out to me The crowds of purple of orchid flowers I can’t see I’ll bow all chords and play along until they shine They’re still not mine (Still not mine) (Still not mine) (Still not mine) Bringing every postcard in until they land Still secondhand She gave my half my thoughts and made me what I was But the same color is filling both of them Meanwhile the crocodile points out what’s left behind The field of yellow daffodils you try but couldn’t find I’ve known since I was pretty young That I’ve never known my mother’s mother tongue I’ve known since I was pretty young That I’ve never known my mother’s mother tongue I’m putting on a smile made out of plasticine And looking clean

Mother Tongue will always click with me a certain way, because I too grew up not knowing anything about my own culture. The only difference is that it's my dad's side of the family, and that even he doesn't know anything. It could very well be because of the brief time the Japanese American camps were active. Our grand/great grand parents probably didn't have any time to teach their own children about home.

I feel this in my soul.... This is to my soul need. She sings so beautifully and magically. I listen to this all day. Soo paceful, with much love. Like her voice and music, give a deep hugs to lonely people. I really feel it in my soul. Thank you very much.
