Remember 5 years ago, Doug said that the 997 Turbo is a Bargain…..oh, how times have changed 😢

2007? It could come out today and still wouldn't look out of place. Porsche really makes timeless looking cars.

I’ve worked on a couple pretty high horsepower 997s and the manual trans is so insanely overbuilt stock that guys run over 1000whp through them without reliability issues at all really. Stock trans, stock clutch. Hilarious how different the design approach is with this car vs some other sports cars. Runs great in the rain and snow, built to be beaten to pieces for many many miles. Just an absolute warrior.

I've lived with a 2010 997.2 Turbo as a daily for exactly one year now. Black on black. As a first-time Porsche owner, I've made the following observations with it being my first 911 experience: (1) It still turns heads... Every day. Albeit, mostly teenagers yelling "Rev it!!!" and Porsche drivers who know and respect what this car embodies. (2) I keep getting told by other Porsche owners that it's a modern classic and the one to have at the moment. I exit the conversations after a few minutes of silence and mouth breathing by the person across from me. (3) There's visible weekly undertones I sense telepathically where my wife signals "Trade it for a Macan so the kids can fit in it" (4) I love the violent way in which it delivers power. Brings me joy every day and even after a year, I keep finding reasons to go out for a drive in it. It never gets boring. (5) I really can't stop looking at it, especially from the back. So sexy. And I catch the neighborhood guys with their bloated 991's and 992's doing the same ... So, for those on the fence, get one. You won't be disappointed.

These are so insanely common here in Germany for a Reason, because it*s one of the Greatest Porsche 911s There is not one Day on the Autobahn and in a Big City where i don*t see at least a Couple of them, very reliable as well, which is why these are often Daily Drivers for People here Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps

I really miss Doug trying to fit himself in the back seats. Bring that back! hahaha

The 997.2 Turbo didn't just get a boost in power. It got a whole new engine with nothing shared. The 997.1 has the famous "Mezger" engine which dates back to the air-cooled days and is easily Porsche's most famous engine. Not shared with lesser model 997s, only GT-cars and Turbo. The 997.2 shared the all-new direct injected engine with the Carrera models and even Cayman and Boxster. At the time this raised eyebrows, since the Mighty Turbo was sharing engine architecture with the lowly cost-cut base Boxster. History has ultimately shown that the new engine architecture is excellent and has cemented Porsche's once-questionable reputation for reliability. However if you want 1,700hp in your 911, you probably still want the Mezger.
  • @urgetodrive
Worth a mention that this generation 911 Turbo was the last to feature the vaunted "Mezger" engine. Legend. Shocked that Doug didn't mention it at all.
  • Doug: "I'm not a Porsche guy" Also Doug: "I just purchased my dream car...a Porsche Carrera GT" Also Doug: "the 997 Turbo is one of the greatest sports car in the world!...maybe I should buy it"
  • @S58985
The 997 is my favorite 911 of all time. Between the Turbo and Turbo S to the GT3RS, they are just all fantastic
  • @cafe405
Clarkson agreed with you, it was this car that won him over in terms of its real world speed vs the ferrari of the time. Its a great segment in the Top Gear series, one of my favorite bits.
  • I bought one of these in 2007 and still own it. I agree that it is the greatest Porsche. I will never get rid of it. World class performance and zero depreciation. Added a sport exhaust and a Cobb tune making it even better. Over 550 hp now and 550 Fulbright of torque. I own several older Porsches but this is my favorite.
  • @NoelKunz
My favorite Porsche. I don’t care what anyone says. Drove one for a week through Napa Valley and it was incredible. My wife enjoyed her endless wine, and I enjoyed the roads.
  • @CTProductionCo
My manual 997.1 Turbo has 135K miles and has many many more to go. I drive it every day and love it. You really can’t go wrong with this car.
  • @SpeedIng80
The 997.1 Turbo is simply amazing. I remember being a passenger in it back in the day, with a friend of mine driving it, already working at Porsche. I was completely flashed by the acceleration, even more at higher speeds above 250kph. It was like accelerating a normal fast car from 50 to 100. It was like god mode in 2007. But it was really comfortable as well. I'd love to buy one now, but too many other seem to have the same idea ;-)
  • @Shooter1812
The little “pocket” in the passenger side door sill is an umbrella holder. Porsche sold, and still sells, a small Porsche branded umbrella that fits perfectly in that spot.
  • This interior of the 911 997 is the real interior of a sports car. I wouldn't change a thing, it's just timeless and beautiful.
  • @toraja04
It was always about the hard launches in this car. Slamming your head against the headrests before electric cars 😎
  • @co7013
It's nice that the badging doesn't even say '911', just Turbo. That will do. A 911 speaks for itself.
  • That infotainment system is not an argument against buttons, it is an argument FOR buttons. That is visually appealing and highly functional. Give me buttons damn it.
