Spin up/down of 189 hard drives from 10MB to 4TB ! - HDD collection, April 2023

Published 2023-04-26
My entire hard drive collection as of April 2023. Over 45 minutes of hard drives spinning up and down!

The drives are sorted by capacity, smaller first. For drives of the same capacity, I placed all duplicates of the same model one after another.
The capacity indicated in the video is as reported by speedsys for drives under 40GB. For drives of 40GB or higher it is the one listed on the drive’s label.

A few of the recordings have been edited either to remove long pauses for some early drives that wait for the controller before doing the seektest and/or for the drives that I needed to actually boot as they need to be parked before spinning down.

If you like hard drive sounds, you may consider watching my single drive videos, where I record the drives in action rather then just the seektest :)

Hard Drive ASMR is my new favourite genre
  • @fallingwater
It's interesting how on old drives that had really slow spinups you can hear the separate initial pulses to the coils.

Ahhh yes the classic school/library computer lab loud boot up noise with that spinning and crackling that would sometimes maybe even send shock down your spine. Not gonna lie. I kind of miss old, loud hard drive you could definitely tell they’re turning on. They always sound like they’re broken, but they’re not 😂

I love how you're making sure to let viewers know that you're parking the heads.

The ultimate hard drive collection video on YouTube. Love the collection!

I may not be in the era of hard drives and their noisy ancestor the modem, but I love the odd sounds of computing. The whirrs, the grinding static, the beep boops; melodies to my auditory sensors.

things in my life have been pretty rough as of late, but these videos calm me down for some reason thank you Arnold for posting videos of these awesome drives!
  • Such an amazing collection! Your vast array of old Seagate's is seriously incredible.
