Lyrics:
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, ""You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you""

But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming

And the sign said
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound
Of silence"

  • I am 82 years old and a fan of the S&G version, but I am totally overwhelmed by Disturbed's cover. It is fascinating, mesmerizing, and I simply can't get enough of experiencing the emotion. This is what great music is all about. World class.
  • Once a wise man said " when you're happy you enjoy the melody but when you are broken you understands the deep meaning of the lyrics."

Disturbed, When this came out I was homeless, on drugs, and then jail. I now have a house, job, and husband. This song and “Clover Cage - In the Moment” are the two songs that helped get rid of my depression. I just want to send love to everyone and I want everyone to know things will get better. We are in this together..I love you 💕
  • My family just used this for my Father's funeral. He loved this version so much, even at 84. So powerful.
  • At my funeral if they don’t play ‘Sound Of Silence’ by Disturbed when they lay me down, I’m haunting everyone.

  • my mom loved this version. She had to hear it everyday. she was battling Parkinsons and Dementia. She had gotten very weak and bed ridden, but we still played this for her at least once a day until the day she passed . It was playing during her final breath. I miss you mom!!

  • It's 2023 and it's still a masterpiece! It never goes out of style. Years later and it's still one of the best songs ever written.
  • whoever listens to this song: Our mayor of GdaƄsk was buried in this atmosphere. May his soul and his loved ones rest in peace.

I played this song to my grandad when it first came out a couple of weeks before he died and he cried. Ive never saw him cry before, my nana said it was the first time since after the WW2. Died at the age of 102, love you grandad. Edit: I was contemplating if i should even write this as the aim of this comment wasn't likes (clearly), however i feel the need to say thankyou everyone who had liked this comment- like seriously nearly 300, wow. But more importantly thankyou everyone who left kind comments wishing me well and keeping my spirits up. Youre all amazing and i hope you have a great day/night dependi g on where you are in the world.

From Wikipedia: "Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.""---That sounds a lot like where we are right now.
