Recreating Iconic 80s Drum Sounds: Can Roland V-Drums & Real Cymbals Coexist?

In our quest to bring back the iconic drum sounds of the 80s for @arcadeorchestra80s , we're experimenting with Roland's incredible VAD 7-series V-Drum kit, triggering lots of custom samples, as well as some commercial ones like the "Hitmaker" SDX for Superior Drummer heard in this example.

One of the main things we wanted to explore was whether real cymbals can be used with an electronic kit - and whether the cymbal mics would pick up too much of the noise from the kit. We want to use real cymbals if at all possible when we tour, so this was an important question to answer.

The song is a riff on Phil Collin's "I Don't Care Anymore." The kit is Roland's VAD706, expanded with extra toms, along with some vintage Simmons SDS9 pads (seen, but not used in this video).

ARCADE ORCHESTRA is an epic reimagining of the biggest hits of the 80s. It will have all the elements of 80s pop - all the synths, drum machines, and production of the time - but with a much bigger, cinematic approach. Arcade Orchestra shows will be an immersive live experience starting in 2024, and feature major guest artists, a live orchestra, a large percussion ensemble called STIKYARD, a world-class band, and choir.

    I used to obsessively repeat the drum solo intro of Starships N.G.S.U.N. on my walkman as a kid. I didn't care about the rest of the song. It's just what I think of as a smash hit sound. Your setup far exceeds what I could envisage in my wildest dreams. Enjoy!
