Charly McLion is a performance name for Charly Büchel since Robert Schroeder's 'Double Fantasy' project in 1986. Featured in the “Floating” section of Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound disc guide, Universal Ave is the sole album by Double Fantasy, a project by German duo Robert Schroeder and Charly Büchel. Shroeder was a protege of Tangerine Dream’s Klaus Schulze and already had a number of albums under his belt when he decided to start the new project with the young guitarist Büchel. Universal Ave builds on Shroeder’s previous works with the optimism of New Age, digital atmospheres, and a steady backbone of pulsing bass synth and rhythm machines to propel the journey. Büchel’s guitar playing is perfectly sparse, coming in at the right moments and interacting with the sequences almost symbiotically. The songs conjure images of soaring over sci-fi landscapes straight into the sunset depicted on the cover. Music for night flights and pensive voyages into the unknown.
