Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to try to lift the heaviest object I can build in Trailmakers! Will a creation be able to fly through the air with such a heavy load?

About Trailmakers:

In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.

Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!

Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.

Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.

Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.

Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Honestly I miss the historically accurate builds thing , when he used to build things that got built before irl I hope he does more of that
  • Imagine if trailmakers had the same impact shockwave physics as instruments of destruction

On thought that struck me at the end was that the number of engines was for vertical lift. I wonder how many fewer engines you could have gotten away with by having more wings at the end :)

Multiplayer idea: Who can lift the most crates at once using a cargo build that looks realistic but also functional without breaking ONE block.
  • @Circle9ru
ok, the problem here is that ScrapMan tested how much engines give enough lift if they oriented verticaly, then he put them horizontaly and add wings. but for that new concept the source of lift are not thrusters, its wings. to make it work properly you could either leave it be vertical with additional thrusters to move side to side, or cut off some engines and add more wings if you want it be horizontal. tbh, you just lucky it evenr worked.

I think if u use more anchor blocks to secure the cargo it will be way more sturdy

If I saw that flying around in a server, I would be terrified - before being humored by its pure function and ENTIRE lack of form

Now that you have this weight you could try to build a tractor pulling competition with the guys :-D

There's an interesting effect that you experienced here; with really complex creations, you can interact with them in build mode. Shooting and damaging parts, for example. You can't destroy anything until the creation spawns in though. It's a really strange effect, as the creation will be mostly untouchable, but sometimes a bullet or rocket or other creation will collide.

This might not be in the spirit of the challenge, but - tons of gimble jets - electromagnet - a couple dragon jets for steering I think that could work.

I just woke up, it's 1PM, and you release a video, what an amazing timing

I was thinking a plane should be able to lift it with many fewer engines, because you get lift from the wings. Stalling is a thing after all, you can't just fly a plane straight upwards.
  • When you started this video and mentioned mathing it out, I decided to try mathing the entire thing out, based on just the weights and the power of the engines. This ran into some interesting hurdles and produced some interesting results. The biggest hurdle was the fact that we have units for the weight of parts, but not the power, and it's not entirely clear what that stat actually measures (at least not to me). I ended up assuming that it's really measuring force and that it's doing so in Newtons, which seemed to be mostly supported by my own testing. The thing is, if the force is rated in Newtons, then the strength gravity in Trail Makers is NOWHERE near what it is on Earth. After some more testing, I got a value of ~2.8011m/sec^2. If that value is correct, then you would have need between 143 and 144 engines to exactly lift the weight (the balance point falls between those two numbers). With all of that said, I'd be kind-of curious to see you revisit this challenge, but with a horizontal takeoff in mind from the beginning. With a plane, most of your upwards force should be coming from the wings, while the engines should mostly provide horizontal force, meaning you should need far fewer of them and with fewer engines you'd have more room to add aerodynamic components that might let you reduce the engine count even further. So, that raises the question: How small can you make a plane that lifts the heaviest object in Trail Makers?

If you're going to put flaps at the leading edges, you'll need to flip them around as you'll want to create a pringle shape in the wing's profile, causing the air to push the front of the wings upwards as the trailing edge flaps push the back of the wing down. Many of my builds take advantage of these reverse flap physics to create lift in wings with inadequate lift

random idea i had when i clicked on the video: 2v2 air battles, each person builds half a plane and they get linked with anchor blocks, or however it needs to be done. Whether it's left v right or front v back would be up to you guys, but each person has to control their half the plane.
  • @ApotheosisStone
Not a crazy idea but I would love to see more stuff with balloons. Even retrying this challenge with them or that biggest explosiv one. If you need something silly as inspiration there is the rockoon (a balloon rocket combo) or that cargo airship thing from the recent veritasium video. Maybe even a challenge to lift and transport different objects like the heaviest weight, the heaviest explosive, and some other objects like a plane, a rocket, and bombs.

Given the redundancy I'd love to see it in a 2 v 1 dogfight survival
  • @gloriouslumi
It seems to me like the anchors are just the same code as the magnets, but with the force dialed up and made to register with all collision objects, not just ones magnets affect. They either didn't think someone would try using anchors one the most massive weight, or the physics system breaks when too much attraction force is applied to non-movable objects (like the ground or other map structures).
