Canada has long been celebrated for its welcoming stance towards immigrants, fostering a prosperous, multicultural society.

But in recent years, rising concerns over living costs and housing shortages have fuelled a mounting scepticism of the country’s mass immigration policies. Leyland Cecco spends time in Toronto – a rapidly growing city where rent is up more than 40% in just two years – to understand the sharp shift in opinion.

It is not protests against immigration itself. It is protets against dumb immigration. I am an immigrant myself, living in Canada for 13 years. The way immigration is being implemented here, now a days, is outrageous for Canadians born Canadians, and for us, Canadians by choice. This is not the country I came for anymore, and this is not the country we want to build. This government needs to go, and immigration needs to be rethinking, preferably by a government that really cares about people.

"We don't need a million more Uber drivers. We don't need a million more Tim Hortons workers."
  • Banks benefit by having more deposits from newcomers. Corporations benefit cause people from over seas will Work for less. Government benefits cause every newcomer needs to pay 1000s of dollars for different fees like drivers licence and health cards you name it. Schools benefit by the fact they can take an entire Indian families life savings in a single tuition payment. to claim that this insane immigration we have here is to the benefit of the average Canadian is psychotic and cynical.

This is not 'anti-immigration', this is 'anti-corrupt government' bringing in too many people (no matter their race, religion etc) that our current infrastructure CAN NOT support.
  • An immigrant student told me she was lured by the ads in India to move to Canada, they promised housing, and a job. When she got to Canada she had to room with 4 people in a 1 bedroom apt, worked the graveyard shift at Tims and couldnt get in to the classes she needed at school, she returned to India bc she said her quality of life was actually better there. Why would Canada bring immigrants to the country with lies like this?

Our judicial system hasn't kept up with the uptick in crime either. Why would you be law-abiding if you can commit crimes and get a slap on the wrist against Canadians that aren't legally allowed to adequately defend themselves?

It's amazing how well people have been programmed to associate immigration policy with xenophobia.
  • @ergosteur
We need to do immigration *responsibly*. The mass of international student visas combined with lack of regulation of colleges and universities regarding their housing, courses, and admissions is one place to start changing.

Canada has been destroyed with reckless immigration policies. I as an immigrant regret my decision to move here decades ago. I am looking forward to leaving this country as soon as I retire.

As a first-generation immigrant who grew up in Toronto, Canada, especially Ottawa and big cities in Ontario, have become unrecognizable as a result of immigration! I’ve been priced out of my home province! It also doesn’t help that the immigrants these days overwhelmingly come from countries with very different cultural values

Blame the system not the people who are also victims of deceptive marketing.
  • @user-hy8fw6fh2k
As immigrants, even we want immigration to be slowed down, give some time for social services and housig to catch up.
  • @Bobobaggins93747
Our system is overloaded - transportation, municipal, social systems, health systems, and education systems!!! Foodbanks and shelters are full; and we're failing actual Canadians. Lastly, crime - violent crime has increased. Look at Brampton and tell me, with a straight face, that isnt the case.

Canada is no different than a handful full of countries in the world that immigrants are fighting to get to their shores. Canada, USA, EU, UK, Australia, and New Zealand are to name a few. Dubai, for example, is a city where many immigrants who gained Canadian passports prefer to escape to in order to avoid taxation and the instability of the West. They command a higher salary with a Canadian passport as they try to shed their backgrounds. I asked an asylum seeker why she came, and she told me it was the passport, government healthcare and was given government housing. The West will soon have to grapple with the numbers as housing shortages, long queues for government healthcare, and poverty rises. The bubble will burst and violence will reach a breaking point as in the UK.
  • @ianleslie6971
And a 49% increase in violent crime since Trudeau came to power. 2 separate immigration Ministers have had a no holds barred ,open door policy. It's not their problem It's the provincial government problem. In India there is an industry of fleecing people who want to come to Canada The Trudeau government has used this to undermine the stability and piggyback on the new vision of a WEF style of post national states.
  • @user-tl2vp1eu1w
Take a look around. Any person with intelligence can see why there is rising anti immigration. Period. Government mismanagement. Period
  • The issue in Canada is not about a well-planned and diverse immigration policy, but rather a significant influx of people from just a few countries, which some perceive as a cultural shift. The long-term impact of this trend on society remains to be seen.
  • @kens5764
Look at the UK. Don't need that here in Canada.
  • @LoneSamurai_X
"Canada doesn't need another million Tim Hortons workers & Uber Drivers"..... EXACTLY 🤦🏻‍♂️💀💀💀
