The history of rock and roll is filled with albums that didn’t do well when they originally released but later became cult classics. Bands like the Velvet Underground or the Stooges are good examples of that. And many 60s garage bands that were featured on compilations such as "Nuggets", "Pebbles" or "Back from the Grave", are also good examples of that phenomenon. But there are still many albums from the 60s that have never gotten the recognition they deserve. "CQ" by The Outsiders, a psychedelic masterpiece from 1968, is one of those records. The album has been reissued a few times over the years and the album has become a cult classic among many enthusiasts of psychedelia from the 60s. But this album still remains fairly known to many music lovers around the world. In this video, were going to take a look at the history of The Outsiders, and the history of this psychedelic gem called "CQ".

These guys were all over the place - punk, freakbeat, garage, psychedelia and more... And they did it all so damn well, such musical talent! I'm going to seek more of their music out right now and I feel I can't do better! Thank you again, Yesterday's Papers, you're the Guv'ner!

They never recorded covers. That is very impressive considering even the Beatles released many. Nice job, as usual, YP.
  • My dad was friends with Wally at the time. He was a wild guy who lost it later in life to dope and booze. Occasionally he would visit us and i found him pretty dense and daunting. But the Outsiders were one of the best bands to come from my home country
  • This is why you YP is the best channel on YouTube - I love that you give so many artists their due recognition, you're doing phenomenal work and thanks a million for putting this one out. Fantastic band!!!

Great to see a video about a band from my home country! The Hague was a hotbed for the Dutch rock scene in the 60s and I grew up with a lot of music from that era through my dad who was a teen at the time. Lots of great bands from the time, I can recommend Q65 and Groep 1850 to anyone who’s into the outsiders as well.
  • WOW! Thank you for turning me on to this band!, they sound great!, can’t wait to dive in. Even the album cover for CQ looks like a post punk album from the early 80s.
  • Thanks for "unearthing" another gem I missed 'cause I was a kid living in Mississippi at the time. Thanks for ALL the gems you keep "unearthing!"

Pebbles, Nuggets, Highs in the Mid Sixties and Teenage Shutdowns just to name a few compilations have introduced me to so many great bands over the years!
  • I enjoyed the pop Dutch invasion groups like the Tee Set George Baker Selection Shocking Blue Golden Earring and Mouth and McNeil and Hocus Pocus but I had never heard of the Outsiders until this video as they were a excellent versatile group so thanks Yesterday's Papers for posting this as this was a Dutch treat.

Thanks for another history lesson about a group I have never heard of before… It’s very exciting to discover a treasure trove of new music, but also sad that such a talented group were not supported by the record label, and most do not know who they are.
  • Brilliant. The Dutch Outsiders are one of my favorite groups. The Cynics and the Lyres have both covered them.

Yes! I love this album sooo much and I think it’s such a shame that so little people know of it… I remember putting on “Misfit” in the car with my dad and saying ‘this song is from 1968, dad’ and he was mind blown. A lot of the songs sound 15 years ahead of its time! Even the cover is so amazing. It’s like a post punk album at least 10 years before post punk became a thing. Thank you Yesterday’s Papers.

I thought the Seeds had the longest hair of any band in 1965-66 until I saw these cats!
  • @margies735
This was awesome! I'd never heard of the Outsiders and I'm blown away on how ahead of their time and experimental they were. YP, you've exceeded my expectations yet again!

This is a great channel to discover music. And it only focuses on mostly English musicians. Imagine how much more is out there from all over the world? I wish we had an American version of this channel.

You've got to be kidding me. I decided to finally listen to the CQ album last night for the first time and then a video is released about it today. What are the odds, lol.
  • @SiL-uj2zl
What an amazing album and had never even heard about it, thanks for bringing it to our attention! Shades of Scream thy last scream era Floyd indeed...
  • Wally Tax died in Amsterdam 57 years old. After writing songs in the seventies and early eighties ( writer/producer ) for some other artists it became silent. His friends in music had to collect money to give him a normal funeral and a gravestone. R.I.P. Wladimir Tax february 14th 1948 - april 10th 2005
  • Totally agree with all of this. Another excellent video. It was always easier to find their more R&B type stuff than CQ in the 60s reissue section of the shops back in the 80s. Wouldn't be surprised if it was still that way. You do excellent work. ROCK ON!
