HONG KONG VLOG | 100+ year old Secret Reservoir in Sham Shui Po, dai pai dong, private kitchen in HK

Published 2022-07-15
Eat through and Explore SHAM SHUI PO and TIN HAU with us!

There's a new guided tour in Hong Kong on the newly opened Ex Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir in Sham Shui Po! This service reservoir was built in 1904, and was only recently discovered when they were trying to demolish it. A group of citizens managed to halt off the drilling, and later they were able to save it as a Grade 1 Historic Building in 2021! The information provided on the tour was quite interesting but honestly it's the architecture that really blew me away. The Romanesque architecture is absolutely stunning and it was hidden underground for over 100 years!

Later on, we went to one of the few left remaining licensed dai pai dongs in Hong Kong for some pig trotter noodles, soy sauce dry noodle, and their most famous home made fishballs and cuttlefish-balls!

For dinner we headed to a unique dining experience in Hong Kong known as a private kitchen. Previously a private kitchen was a way to run a kitchen, but without the licensing of a public normal restaurant, so you found private kitchens through referral and hearsay - so only the most connected knew about them. People love them so we tried a Hakka styled private kitchen for the night!

“If you like our name, you’ll like our tours” is their motto.
Founded in late 2016, Humid with a Chance of Fishballs Tours is a small grassroots independent company that strives to offer authentic and off-the-beaten path tours so tourists and expats alike can get a taste and glimpse of true local life in Hong Kong.

We run tours in Hong Kong for people that truly want to see the real, true, local and authentic sides of Hong Kong. The stories and information we want to share is about the hole-in-the-wall owners, and about the local foods that have so much history and importance to Hong Kong. We go into shops that don't speak a lick of English, because we bridge the gap between the West and the East. Eat through Hong Kong's heritage, culture and tradition with us!

  • @MeiinUK
It is very nice that they preserved this place.... Like, literally... I did not even know that this existed as well...
  • @TheHoth1
I didn’t know about the reservoir until now! Well, I also left hk for about 30+ years. Thank you for showing us this historic site. I will definitely go check it out when I visit HK.
  • @MoChua
We still have an apartment in North Point and my cousins live there. We were supposed to visit in 2020, but the pandemic scuttled all those plans. I've been going to HK since I was a young boy and I frequented it alone in the 80s to buy vinyl records to bring back to Manila. I miss HK so much. My fave city next to Tokyo.
  • I loved everything in this video Virginia. These are some nice looking restaurants, and the food looks delicious. I love it that you are uploading new videos. The next time I visit HK I got to hire you as my tour guide, so I can see all the hot spots in the area.
  • @Ajd83.

Beautiful architecture. Rice Dumplings are my favorite. I like both savory and sweet so I would be at that dumpling house everyday if I was in HK 😂
  • @allanchan8370
Hey V! I think both you and ex-roomie are both pretty "dahn"! Careful you don't OD on collagen 🤪 See you on the next video!!
  • No way i went to the place in Fook Yueng .... sorry Fuk* 30+ years ago when i went to school in Kowloon. Saint GEORGES ... think the owners are no the same but the sweet rice balls where amazing. Very sticky. Also loved the fish balls back in the day sold from little carts on the side of the road. with a thin but very potent curry broth. Loved the spices.

Great to see that Hong Kong’s history is being preserved. It looks like a place where you can have parties when the weather is a bit cooler..reminds me of Manchester where many of the factories were being renovated for party spaces and other purposes. Definitely a place I gotta go to, the private dining places..just curious..is it traditional Cantonese cuisine or local HongKong cuisine? Or home style meals in Hong Kong? You are always smiling…which makes me want to try what you are having.. Personally, I am a noodle lover..so a noodle tour is also what I am curious about..also…is there something you eat when it is extremely hot and humid? For example, in Korea, we call this Bok period or Bok Nal which means days of really hot weather..so we traditionally have hot chicken soup with an entire chicken stuffed with sticky rice.. Just getting more and more interested.. Love your content and trying to learn a few Cantonese expressions so when I go to Hong Kong..I can maybe communicate..even just a little..haha Be healthy and happy!! I will spend another week looking forward to watching another episode of Humid with a chance of fish balls!!
  • @SuMtOnE
Are they bouncier than the meatballs featured in the God Of Cookery? =D another amazing contents. Does Hong Kong have a State Fair that only happens once a year by any chance? in CA we have a California State Fair. It finally opened back up after 2 years of covid and last from July 15-30. Thank You
