Sheldon's mom in "Young Sheldon" is the actual daughter of Mary's character in Big Bang Theory. That's why their voices and faces are almost identical.

I love how Mary Cooper is a kind of a simple Christian woman on one hand and yet she understands her son so well.

I just realized just now how Mary was basically the most "powerful" character in the show. It seems no one can move her, be it with intelligence or feistiness. Mary deflects them as quickly as she bites back.

Mary Cooper was a beautifully conceived character and so wonderfully portrayed by Metcalf... her brief appearances on the show are magic.

Mary is exactly the mother Sheldon needed. Imagine he had Leonard's mom, he would just have been a cold machine and just intolerable.

Mary in Young Sheldon is still the "growing" mother who's trying to figure out exactly how to handle the ultimate wackadoodle that is Sheldon, hence why we see constantly see her "overreacting" on certain things Sheldon does. Mary in TBBT on the other hand is a mother who has "seen it all" and is completely chill whenever Sheldon gets into another trouble.

In weird way, I think Sheldon takes more after his mom than she thinks. They both says things that could be considered "rude" without the intent to do so and both are intently focused on what they believe in, be it God or science.

I love how this show portrays a religious zealot as a very warm, accepting, nurturing and open-minded person. They do exist.
