Take a selfie of your face. Now flip the photo. Something looks off doesn’t it? That’s because the symmetry in your face may not be perfect. And neither is mine! But what does it take to make the perfect face? And are some faces inherently better looking than others?! Start watching to find out if math can make you more beautiful.

I think it would be really interesting if Matpat covered colour combinations with clothing. I never know what goes with what lol

As an artist, I think I can add another layer to this. When a face has perfect vertical symmetry, we don't register it as a real face because real faces just aren't that perfectly symetrical. Because of this, they can fall into the uncanny valley. They make you uncomfortable. When I draw a person in front-facing perspective, I'll use the symmetry tool but I'll always go back in and liquify or redraw some of the features to break the symmetry and make them less creepy and lifeless. The uncanny valley plays a huge part in this because our brains register symetrical faces as unnaturally perfect. Plus, asymetry can make things more interesting and therefor more memorable. I'm no scientist or mathematician though, so take this with a grain of salt. (Side note- I already love this new channel. It's a really creative and cool idea)

I watched this last night and it made me feel more confident. I was hanging out with my friend today and she started using the filter and was upset her face was not symmetrical. I showed her this video and she said she felt better about how she looked. MatPat out here single handed increasing the confidence of teenage girls 👏

Even as a face blind person, the perfectly symmetrical faces are super uncanny valley.

Learning that Mark doesn't pass the test is definitely a confidence booster. If the sexiest man on the Internet doesn't pass then maybe these tests aren't so important after all.
  • I love how Matpat drops channels with six videos, it really helps me get invested in the channel!!

I think authentic, friendly expressions is also a big deal on how they were rated. But that's harder to analyze, other than micro expression matching macro expression.

In art, asymmetry is often a desired trait, as long as it's with purpose. If you have a symmetrical piece, it's boring, it's simple, it's quick to analyze and quick to throw into the bin.
However, asymmetrical pieces leave you thinking, they cause your brain to go into overdrive as your eyes wander the entire canvas. Why? Because like Aerosmith, you "don't wanna miss a thing." You check every Tom Nook and cranny and try to understand everything about it. It's like a scavenger hunt or a "Where's Waldo?" In some cases, you find yourself asking "why?" and in others, like certain precarious sculptures, you ask yourself "how?" It's like Matt's older FNAF videos mention. You keep going back looking for more, but when you figure out all of the answers, your brain discards it as no longer necessary. It's complete, it's finished, but by not answering every question, it stays in the back of your mind. That's why pieces like "Mona Lisa" are so memorable, not because of the portrait itself, but because of the mysteries surrounding it. Seriously, in reading the name "Mona Lisa," you can't tell me a silhouette of the painting didn't just pop up in your mind... Right? Only me? Well, I'm weird.
  • I actually believe the reason the Team Theorist faces ranked so highly overall is because we are used to these faces, honestly an interesting result that could make for a great episode to talk about seeing something more often improving it’s look
  • I always found the idea that symetry as beauty to be odd, considering things like beauty marks are often considered attractive, and many of the best fashion outfits are intentionally not symetrical. I've always found style and faces with less symetry to be more attractive, because they are more interesting to look at.
  • @ZieleAych
I'm kinda hoping they do a theory on hair textures and why many stylists aren't trained to do curly hair.
  • I love how everyone taking the survey ranked Team Theorist high. Even though we are all strangers, how much we have seen everyone's face make the Team feel more familiar, almost like friends. No one is going to call their friend unattractive to their face.
  • @Polinize
Markiplier has Darkiplier, Matpat has Symmetri-Matt.

  • In high school art (years ago) I chose to do a self-portrait every year. My teacher had said 'the brain thinks symmetry is beautiful including in faces. and it messed with me each year. but in the following years, I tried to do one 'correcting' my face and hated it lol. I think that was actually when I started to like how I look
  • @b.schurman
I once told my kids that scars mean that you are healthy. (My son has had a scar on his arm for several years and he is currently 13. Also, I have a scar where I had a rod put in my should when I broke my collarbone.) To me, scars mean you were injured or had surgery, and were able to recover.
  • @XionEternum
The biggest problem with that symmetrical face flip filter is that the shadows on the face aren't corrected and make it feel artificial and enters uncanny valley territory.
  • @blueroses4112
I remember doing this survey! There were definitely a few pictures that set off my “uncanny valley” alarm and I surmised that they had been digitally altered. So in my case, natural asymmetry is more attractive than artificial symmetry.
  • The rule of 5ths and 3rds gave me flashback to art class when we were doing self portraits. The rule of 5ths matched well with how we were taught to guide our drawings. The rule of 3rds were a bit different. Which might explain that, outside of the fact that I can't draw to save my life, something about the drawing felt off. Now I know that it was the rule of 3rds XD
  • Wow. Before this video, I had crazy disforia about my face. I put my face into procreate and put it into fifths and thirds. Matches up almost perfect exept my eye and nose on the left size. Thank you style theory!
