"Bonita & the Bandit" is the full, color-version, of the mini-Episode that plays throughout the Short Film "GRUFF" (available here: rb.gy/fm2zk6)

After the extensive visual effects work in the Short Film "GRUFF", it was such a relief to experiment with a more simplified approach to animated movement with "Bonita". This Stop-Motion/Puppetry hybrid is a style I can certainly see myself returning to for simpler stories. What do you think?

With the release of this color-cut, I wanted to not only showcase the bright visuals I so enjoyed putting into this little Western world, but also to highlight the amazing voice talent within the Episode in full definition.

So I hope you enjoy "Bonita & the Bandit" - A Gruff Story

What do you guys think about the more "simplistic" style? Would you like to see more like this? Or more like GRUFF (more detailed, smoother movement, etc.)? Let me know!
  • @BuzzLightbulb
Am I the only one who thought that El Mayor was played by the grandpa when he was younger?
  • @GracetheNifty
"You take that back farmer Jim-" "Yes ma'am!" I didn't think four frames could crack me up that much, but here we are.
  • We got the Gruff television show inside of the Gruff Short Film as its own Gruff episode, the Gruffverse is expanding

I adore Bonita! What a feisty, strong, confident little girl. "Didn't your Mama tell you kidnapping's a certain sort of impolite?" I just love her!

I wish I was exaggerating when I say that this short film put me to tears. TWICE. The strong correlation between family and the level of trust they reciprocate, is so touching.

“Honey what about our date?” NOT NOW THERES A NEW GRUFF SHORT FILM 🗣️🗣️🗣️

I thought you were done, but you put in more effort, time, and money to make another full fledged video. You’re amazing, and I don’t think you hear that enough. Edit: I don’t think it’s clear enough, you guys have pushed me to making this comment unnatural. I made this comment on the Premiere, PREMEIRE! I thought he was making a bit more, but it’s just a put together video. So stop commenting cringe, because even though I was a bit wrong, the film was great, and this probably took up to 6 months to make because of the background art, coloring, and voice lines.
  • The fact El Mayor looks so much like Abuelo/Abuelito is so interesting to me. As a film buff, this stuff always makes me think about what filmmakers are trying to show us about their characters and how that leads to the overall message they are trying to deliver through their work. In my analysis of Abuelo, I got this... Maybe Abuelo sees himself in El Mayor. He is strong and silent primarily because he wants to be able to look out for Hazel and his family, just as El Mayor protects Olden Town. Yet, this idea of wanting to look out for his family is what causes Hazel to think he is not impressed with her, thus causing her to live out loud as a super spy. Yet, as we see in "Gruff", Abuelo is proud of Hazel. Just as El Mayor is proud to have his town and his familia. This is best shown after Abuelo dies in the film and, through a POV shot, we see that he had the newspaper with Hazel on it and other things relating to her career on the wall surrounding his TV. The fact that we don't see this until after he passes could suggest that Hazel never truly knew how strong he thought she was until she sat down in his chair. For, when she did, she saw the world he had made for himself in front of the television. A world where his familia is strong in ways that he is not. They are strong in ways we have yet to see. So, when we do see that he has been staring at Hazel's work and the adventures of El Mayor this whole time, we get to see the ways Hazel is strong that we have not seen just yet. Thus, the point of the film is that all are strong regardless of how they live. Further, it is that the strong and silent can love just as much as those who live out loud. Just that they love in a different way that is not always noticed until after they are no longer in our lives. Thus, every moment that we have in this life is a moment to show off our hidden strength and our love for one another no matter how we express it. This is what makes life, for both the Abuelos and the Hazels of the world, worth living. Sorry if this is not what you intended as the filmmaker. I know every film has something it tries to say and that audiences can interpret that message in many ways. The same can be said for characters as what they go through in the film brings this message full circle for the audience. This is just my interpretation of Abuelo between the full "Gruff" film and this short. If you were intending something else for your characters, especially Abuelo, I would love to hear about it since it would help me to understand more about one of my new favorite short films! Have a wonderful day!

I’m not an expert or anything, but I’m truly impressed by the level of accuracy in the costumes, especially since they’re made of paper Note the split skirt Farmer Jane is wearing, and the outfit Bonita is wearing

A new film in the gruff cinematic universe

I can't wait to see what El Mayor will accomplish in this week's episode of Gruff! What a treat!
  • @Shadow__Pilot
The fact that her father watched this film repeatedly, and never said anything in the sheriff, never said anything makes so much sense now. He was proud of his daughter this whole time, but would hope that she noticed and due time. But time went on, and she never noticed.I feel like I’m gonna cry
  • I would loooove more of this. I remember watching Toy Story 2 and seeing Woody's Roundup made me want an actual show of that. This is the same feeling.
  • @jengatower
MY THOUGHTS AFTER SEEING GRUFF WERE LITERALLY “damn I wish I could watch this cowboy show episode start to finish”
  • @meganrunyan801
I like both styles honestly!! The style of this one worked to give it an old-timey western episode feel, but I feel this style wouldn’t have worked as well in GRUFF all the way through. That needed the more detailed, smoother style. So it depends on the story for me❤
  • @ItzMuffinzz
New Inanimate insanity, Spooky Month, Murder Drones, and now GRUFF??? This is an awesome week to be an animation fan!!!
  • @charam5725
It’s crazy how much effort this guy puts into his work just to give us a short story. It’s so great to see how people still care about quality of their work ❤️
  • @Fruityloops1517
When watching Gruff I literally said to myself, I wish I could see what these tv shows are like. So excited♡
