How ruthless can Arsenal be this summer?

Published 2024-04-18
On Wednesday night, Arsenal's Champions League hopes were ended in Munich, in their first quarter-final at that level in 14 years.

Mikel Arteta was left lost for words in how to console his side, but they still remain in the Premier League title race.

So how can the Spaniard ensure the Gunners' season doesn't peter out? How ruthless can they be in this summer's transfer window - or should Arteta be able to get more from the squad already at his disposal?

Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's David Ornstein and Art de Roche to discuss and analyse how different Arsenal could look the other side of the summer transfer window.

People are mad. Arteta as a rookie coach, first management job, has been phenomenal! He’s challenging some of the world’s best managers with a fairly thin squad. Wake up everyone! Arsenal have an amazing manager.

To be fair it's crazy to think that we expected arsenal in the final 4 or the final or even to win it in their very first season back in the competition. I think we will come back much stronger next season when the players realize they belong in those big games. We obviously need timber back: tomiyasu was being asked to play like zinchenko. we need support for martinelli on the left, I would say either rice as the 6 and sign a xhaka esque player or rice as that left sided 8 but with less instruction to fill in the spaces in the middle. We wonder why martinelli isnt the same player this year when we no longer play with zinny or xhaka on the left, both of whom are brilliant at linkup play and linebreaking passes.

We have come to this stage in 3 years remember that .. I’m with Mikel and what he’s doing certain fans who want him out need to look at the bigger picture..

I’m an Arsenal fan and I see no reason why arteta shouldn’t be signed for another season + more on another contract. I also see no reason why people are calling for him to be outed. Who else would you sign?? He has brought this club leaps and bounds in the past couple years.
  • People are delusional. Saying: “Oh, how many years dows he need” or “He is not good at team management”. He plays in the premier league and he’s consistently competing for first place. It doesn’t matter how many yesr it takes, there is nobody out there who can get us anything better than him rn in one or two seasons. Nobody. Look at posteglo, Ten hag, Pochetin, Tuchel… these are considered part of the best managers rn. Futbol is hard bruv. You won’t win every yesr and you won’t win every trophy. What matters is we play with passion, heart and ambition.

Interesting discussion. One thing that stuck out to me is how there seems to be a distinction between the first 11 and the squad players. In 2024 there is ONLY the Squad, yes there is a spine of the team but his lack of rotation of key positions is an issue over a long season. There should be a competitive cover for Saka, so he isn't run into the ground and where he can be challenged to keep improving. As a Villa fan, i have a lot of admiration for the Arsenal team, I think you are having a phenomenal season. Having said that, the win by Villa was a tactical battle. The first half play by Villa was a tactic, a high risk and reward to set up the 2nd half. His objective was to make Arsenal play, push them as much as possible, make them run and move. To accomplish this Villa did have to defend like fiends but it was deemed to be a calculated risk as we are organized and have done it well before. Second half he tweaked the formation and unleashed the players to go forward at full pace as planned. Knowing that his team had conserved energy and Arsenal had not. I only mention this because the lack of rotation over a season has a huge impact in the last 3rd - this is on Arteta.

Ayo and Art are wonderful, and David is the best asset The Athletic have. They all speak clearly and insightfully.

When chasing in these crunch games, we seem to get caught between not wanting to concede further and going all out to turn things around. It’s a balance we haven’t got right in several big games over the last 3 seasons. We need to take bigger risks in these critical parts of games. The second CL tie was a text book example.
  • Very good takes . My issue with Mikel Arteta is the squad management. If you're not going to trust these players why keep them Smith Rowe should have been on that Bayern pitch
  • @Kitofthearts
The fans really need to maintain calm, even if they don’t sign anyone over the summer, the squad are going to be able to develop & improve throughout the whole 24-25 season. By promoting academy players and allowing those in the squad already to play more minutes, the summer of 2025-26 where the major signings are going to need to be made, in order to win the league & UCL. Next season is going to similar to this year but with more emphasis on Arteta’s ability to innovate & coach. Alonso is proving that he is capable of the main serial winner 🏆
  • @Robbeans81
We need a killer striker sadly Eddie isn’t at the elite level . Proud of the team though
  • @leemcphail634
Imagine if we win the next 5...... City have drawn a game between now and the final game...... Liverpool have matched us win for win over the next 5 games. We come to the final day with only GD separating the 3 of us with us against Everton at the Emirates, City at home to West Ham and Liverpool at home to Wolves! Currently, we are +49 with City +44 and Liverpool +41...... We need to keep our foot on the gas and score goals as our GD is NOT insurmountable! It's going to be a close call, but we need to keep the faith and get behind the lads! COYG!!!

Its the emotional reaction to the exit and loss to Villa. Just like when a player does not play, all of a sudden HE IS THE ONE who is the perfect answer to all the problems, Arteta is doing a fantastic job, he is the right manager and thinking that we can get someone better is just delusional at this point. This is not a video game where you switch and change things without affecting the overall performance of the team. Mistakes cost us games, not the tactics. Arteta does only trust 13 players, so exhaustion is the reason, we obviously don't have City's bench quality so we run players into the ground. We know that at least 3 players have to be sold in the summer and Saka needs an alternative who does not drop our level of play where that player becomes invisible on the pitch. Timbers injury combined with Tomis and Partey's has significantly affected a lot of players physical levels. COYG! This is still a very good season👏
  • It’s the first nice heard Ornstein talk like a fan, or sound like a fan. He’s always managed to hide his fandom behind Ornstein the journalist, but here, you can see the fandom (the disappointment/passion). We all share your sentiments David.
  • They should get this dominant midfielder from Leverkusen. Granit Xhaka. He'd be a perfect fit.
  • @TheJoker-um9tp
Bayern Munich just drew last night against Madrid, we aren't far away from the best around. The players are still young. I was told that man city finished 2nd in the league. Liverpool finished 1st once at least 4/5 times. Arsenal are similar to man city when they were building a team that can win the league. Liverpool had a much better front 3 when they competed with city.
  • Loved the vid, Agreed alot of our issues is going to be in midfield next season and depth, ESR, Partey, Jorginho and Viera are all either not good enough injury prone or moving on. I'd love to see Gibbs-White, Zubimendi and Kimmich (If those rumours are true) come in and push us on to a new level but we need those players and a 20/25 goal a season striker and a Saka back up/competition
  • @ljheyes8163
Just remember that Klopp has only won the CL once. Leave Arteta alone people it’s his first year in the competition
  • @amt7386
During Wenger's heydays at Arsenal from 98 to 05. Never went above the Quarters. Arteta's first season in UCL, people criticising already
