"You can wax on, wax off all you like. I'm still kicking your ass."

God Hand was an unlucky Clover game. It may have failed to win a jackpot in sales, but it still sports a killer hand...

Mad props to youtube.com/user/MichelKobayashi for his in-depth God Hand tutorial. This was a useful way to double-check some of the assumptions I had about the combat system. If you're into God Hand he's also worth a look for how he manages to make the game look EASY. Man's superhuman.

Extra God Hand Notes:

The designboi chart says "most" launch moves as technically Forearm Smash and Barrel Roll Kick work a bit differently. They always (even on DIE) launch by default, but after a stun or during a counter-hit they have a stronger launch that sends them straight across the stage until they hit something (like the contextual Air Launch Kick).
Resistance to launches isn't the only thing that changes as the levels progress. Overall from levels 1-3 and then DIE enemies are more likely to block moves with specific properties e.g. trips or launches. I was going to put this on the chart but couldn't think of a way to communicate it clearly, and at that point I wasn't gonna put so much thought into making sure a silly gag is totally comprehensive.
As you go up the levels enemies also maintain their blocks for less time. While this SOUNDS like an advantage for the player, it actually means you have a smaller window to notice they're blocking and act accordingly with a guard break.
Technically in that Animation in Action Games video I did almost three years ago I was wrong about God Hand (but sort of right at the same time). Enemy attack animation speed does not change from levels 1-3, they really do just attack more often and don't wait their turn as much as on level 1. HOWEVER on level DIE attack animations do actually become faster. Then again, if you get to Level DIE in the first place you've got to have pretty fucking good reaction speeds anyway, so the faster pace still works.
Play God Hand.

As usual with these videos, some detail over God Hand's sweet systems didn't make it into the video for the sake of time and/or clarity. If you want to read a little about them, I've got a few extra notes in the description that you might want to check out. Play God Hand.

You don't just kick someone into outer space. You dragon kick their ass into the milky way

"Preform poorly and pick up petty prizes, or ball with the best and bag bitchin' bounty" probably made my 2018. Wonderful video, man!
  • @PencilManners
"On top of getting harder, better, faster and stronger, these Daft Punks..." Holy shit how do you string together so many bangers in 10 minutes!?
  • @wdcain1
God Hand is one of the few games I consider perfect and worthy of a 10/10 score. There's not one thing I'd change.

God Hand isn't just "one of the best brawlers" I have played. It is a strong contender for the best ever, in all sub-genres (beat n up, hack n slash, action whatever...). Shinji Mikami is a genius.

Miek Kobe a god hand youtuber is a solid proof that this game isn't bad it's just the player who can't understand it well & can't play it cuz they only button mash through the whole game. that's why most of the game journalist isn't relevant anymore, cuz u r the one who decide if its a good game (your type of game) or not
  • God Hand is so underrated Some things that weren't mentioned in the video, the duck not only fills up your style meter but often puts you in the perfect position to counter an enemy since you stay in their face. Besides the assigned combos Gene has some set moves that he can use no matter what, like the sweep kick done by pressing square after dodging, the Shoryuken to use on enemies that are launched high enough by pressing Back+Triangle, and the charge kick to use on downed enemies with the same input that can bounce them up to the perfect height for a juggle. These moves are incredibly useful, aren't well-explained within the game itself, and learning when to use them makes a big difference in how you'll be able to handle the enemies. Also, don't just play on easy mode and spam the high side kick. Like, come on man. Play the game.

Damn man, I miss this guy still. 2 years and he's still in my mind. I really wish he'd make new stuff, his videos were amazing.
  • @Blazing_00
I don't care what you say, I'll never give up on God Hand 2
  • @GamingKick
Gameplay and all was great...but can we talk about the amazing and hilarious story
  • @Ramiel981
Your scripts are hands down the best when it comes to 'dorks talking about video games'. Brilliant video
  • Perhaps the best mechanical analysis on God Hand. One other thing about God Hand I think would have done better is the limited power ups for the roulette moves. While I understand they were done to balance the game, I wish there were more of them because I used them very few and far between. Also, excellent analysis on the right stick ie dodge move . I believe (personally) it elevates God Hand from good to great. In many action games, the defensive options are usually underdeveloped. One block or one dodge that's all. In God Hand, you have three kinds of dodge, which also contribute in adding more depth to your moves (positioning and attacking).

Just wanted to say that your character action (or stylish action or cuhrayzee action or whatever the fuck people call them) videos are some of my favorite videos. I also appreciate that you talk about the mechanical things in games in a way that has a lot of personality and isn't like an hour long emotionless dissertation on the subject. Good stuff.

I've just now realised that Absolver, the "Kung-fu Souls" as some call it, is a lot like Godhand... Now I really wanna play Godhand!
