More About O.I.: Chris revisits the Tiki bar where he made his first ever deal. He wants to celebrate the biggest deal he's ever made by drinking down memory lane. It is early morning and there is only one other customer, Barry, and the Barman.

Barry is drinking to forget and is in no mood to celebrate anything. Only Chris' offer of free drinks for a week if he can't solve Barry's problems makes Barry change his mind. Barry has a unique problem. He came up with a truly original idea. And he is the only one immune to it. Chris doesn't believe a word of it and is determined to prove Barry a liar and win the bet.

"Fire trucks are actually water trucks" head detonates

“We’ve gotta come up with an original idea for a short film” “I’ve got it!”

One of the sci-fi concepts that I love most, an infectious disease that travels through words, written language, music, tunes or any combination thereof.

I feel like this wouldn't suit being a whole movie. It's perfect as it is

I used to be a fan, but after seeing this masterpiece I'm a whole air conditioner

The idea he had was actually the entirety of the Krabby Patty formula.

Its crazy that an original idea literally blows peoples minds. Pretty cool premise, my mind is blown! 🤯

Everyone in the bar displayed amazing acting. Movie quality stuff. The rest were ok but those three absolutely killed it. The writing and dialogue were great and believable. Keep giving us this please.

I guess you can say his idea was.... mindblowing? I’ll just see myself out..

This was like one of those "A guy walks into a bar" jokes.

So I have two things to note : one, this plot reminds me a lot of a short story by Dino Buzzati : Hecatomb at the pentagon, and the physical effect of ideas is a recurring theme in his works, I recommend this author if you like this theme. Secondly, I have a theory o why Jonathan Carnahan from the Mummy didn't die from hearing the idea while Hagrid did : while under the influence of substances, it's easy to see connections that aren't there, therefore you can easily compare two ideas that aren't all that similar, and then once you're sober you wonder what you were thinking (it can remain useful to open up your mind); Hagrid only had one shot while Jonathan was copiously intoxicated therefore could ease up the shock (unfortunately it came with the downside of intoxication : overreaction and acting on impulse). But why was the inventor immune...? this one escapes me.

O.I. = "Original Idea" This story works well because the short format doesn't require it to have more than its very basic anatomy. The guy at the bar, the bartender, the businessman who walks in, and Chekhov's gun up there behind the bar. If this were much longer than it is, it would have to start answering various questions that would dilute its power. The punch line is also hilarious, where the story ends exactly how the man at the bar feared it would, but with a small wrinkle that keeps him in a state of mystery and uncertainty.

Who else was expecting the immune guy to blow him away in order to have the idea all to himself?

This was so utterly awesome that I cannot believe that it hasn't won some award or something. Greatly done!

An old Twighlight Zone (Outer Limits?) episode, where a "secret" is passed from person to person - and everybody who hears the secret goes completely mad. I think that was the inspiration for this short.

I wanted to know the idea but then I realized they’d have to actually think of a completely original thought lol
  • I was kind of annoyed that the microwave behind the dude when he’s talking to his wife has a 1 minute timer on it and waiting for someone to press start (I know someone who forgets to start the microwave a lot 🙄) but then I realized that was probably done for continuity so they didn’t have to go back and change the time on the microwave between shots. Clever!
