Discovering you’re autistic: what next? | Divergent Voices hosted by Purple Ella

This episode of Divergent Voices explores the impact of discovering you are autistic, whether via clinical assessment or self-diagnosis. Purple Ella is joined once again by blogger Emily Katy and Neurodevelopmental Specialist Hannah Hayward, and together they explore the ‘what next’ - from advocating for yourself during an assessment, to recognising when you are masking, and making adjustments that benefit your life going forward.

  • I just got my late autism diagnosis on the 22nd of may 2024. Just 8 days ago. I'm 43 years old. I'm forever grateful for autistic youtubers like you. It means the world to me. Thank you. 🏆❤

I have a journey of receiving a diagnosis right now. It is a tricky situation, because I have depression. A psychiatrist see some traits of social anxiety and adhd. However while I have depression I can't be fully diagnosed with adhd because depressed people also have some level of innatention. Also I have some autistic traits, but my mum doesn't see it. I think that now my psychiatrist is pretty confused but I am glad that I can continue this journey of self discovery..

I desperately wanted to be a professional figure skater 😅😅😂😂 I knew everything there was to know about figure skating and different figure skaters etc. I also didn’t start until I was 16 lol 😂 and it was me and a bunch of 7 year olds in the figure skating class, lol 😂 - I felt a bit like the odd one out, and I figured (pun intended) that maybe it wasn’t for me. 😅😁 My interest lasted for years though, but I preferred watching it on the tv, reading about it, etc. Good times! Heh!

One mental hospital would give me stuff to organize when I was upset. But that was in 1993. So before they were diagnosing many women with autism.

Masking is so confusing for me... I genuinely don't think I'm ever fully unmasked, not until I'm 100% alone. I often have the conversation in my head about what my 'true personality' is (whether this is tied to or separate from my masking ???) which is just an overthinker's nightmare. A brave and amazing video as always, thank you all! 🙂

So how do one unmask in front of family and friends… I feel a bit shy about it. 🙈

I guess that being seen as "more autistic" after identification/diagnosis could be, at least in part, from increased awareness of autistic traits and transitioning to labelling those traits as autistic...?
