I just got some new hand planes so I figured it was a good time to make a video on my sharpening process!

All the chisels and planes I used in this video are from Woodcraft, they have been great for me and I can't wait to put the new ones to good use! You can find them here -

You are by far one of the best teachers on YouTube. As a new woodworker who is just gaining confidence, you make us feel at ease. Thank you once again!
  • The knife sharpener arrived quickly and in good condition youtube.com/post/UgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCoz… I was happy to see that that packaging was easy to open. I did not need a chain saw to get into the package. The sharpener was smaller than I expected but that might turn out to be and advantage because it will be much easier to store than my old sharpener. The instructions on the package were simple and concise; perfectly adequate for this product. I liked that the two slots were labeled with "Course" and "Fine" on both sides of the sharpener. Now, how does it work? It's fantastic. A few swipes of the knife through the two slots and the knife was sharper than when it was new. The rubber surface on the bottom held it in place while sharpening. I thought the small size might be a problem but it was not a problem at all. In fact, I prefer it to the larger sharpeners I have used in the past. On top of that, the small size makes it very easy to store.I love it and highly recommend it.

More awesome content from the world's most amazing multi tasker. thanks for sharing.
  • Thankyou very much Tamar for explaining about closing up the frog gap to help with tear out. Now I know why it's adjustable.😄

Nice job. I appreciate Paul Sellers and his simplistic style myself. Thank you

There must be 200 videos on this process on YouTube, but yours is the first one that actually didn’t make it feel intimidating. Thank you.

Nice sharping tutorial probably best ever.

OMG! That last bit where your being asked to make dinner while your doing something, I can absolutely relate. It seems to be when you are always in the critical part of what your doing; or when you finally get set up and are ready to get down to actual work. The things kids bring to our lives!
  • @Jim__K
This is one of the best sharpening videos I've seen. Most make it overly complicated. Yours is very well done.

Great video as always been having a hard time bringing a few old planes back to life.. I love your angle stops. Thank you

For people just getting into woodworking, easily available, affordable, flat, diamond stones is a relatively new development. They are gradually starting to take over woodworking but there are still lots of people using different systems and getting good results. But for beginners this diamond stone setup is by far the easiest way to go.

This is so timely. I literally just started restoring my dad’s Stanley planes. Thank you for breaking it down so simply.

That's the first time I have seen an explanation of the setting up of a sharpening guide - complete mystery to me until now. Thanks.
  • @65BlueEagle
Brilliant! I own one of those digital angle meters for my table saw blade and a honing guide for sharpening and I groaned aloud when I saw you using them together! Something I had never thought of doing!! 🤦‍♂️ Thanks!
  • Thank you for the Jig idea and keeping it informative and simple. Your videos are great.
  • Wow. Best sharpening tutorial ever. Learned more in the past 26 minutes than in the hours of other vids over the years. Always with the epiphanies, you. Thanks.

This is an excellent video. I appreciate you giving Paul Sellers credit. His advice seems to be the foundation of your approach. You were kind enough to give credit where credit was due. I like your discussion of blade angles. This topic confuses me. Your explanation helped to clear up some of that confusion. I liked how you created stops for various angles right on the diamond stone holder. The way you cut the recesses for the stones astounded me. I have been thinking about making a stone holder for a long time. I have designed in my mind all sorts of jigs to use with the router to cut those recesses. Then you build a plexiglass base plate for your router and cut the recesses out by hand. So much for my overthinking.

You are my go-to! Did you ever do a video on how to use hand planes and chisels? If the content coming!! Fan girl moment here but I actually gasp out loud when I get a notification when you release a new video!😊
  • @banquo3051
Love your presentation, the fact you name check Paul sellers and that you have kids around and in your workshop and video. Great content. Thanks
