I want to cry! This sounds exactly like my daughter! I’m going to get her tested. I realize she needs a multi sensory curriculum in math, writing, spelling, phonics, and reading. She LOVES science and geography. She knows 39 states, capitals, and abbreviations. If you add numbers or rules to a lesson, she automatically gets frustrated. She can break a word apart to pronounce it but if you remind her of spelling rules to write it, she starts crying. I love this comment section! It’s given me new material to try. I refuse to give up on my baby. It’s almost 12am and now I’m researching materials mentioned in the comments lol 😂! I’m not giving up.

Awesome that reading is really taking off for him! We have really, really struggled with math with one child in our homeschool...sometimes feels like we've tried every technique that exists. When you mention working on place value for three or four years...that's exactly where we're at, too

Thank you! 🙏🏼 I recently started with Singapore math but the primary 2022 and I was second guessing bc it’s so easy for me but it’s really hands on and my daughter seems confident doing the workbooks.

    I feel for you!! I have a 5th grader with dyscalculia, it's rough. ❤️

We have been using TGTB Math for my daughter who has identical issues. Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Inattentive ADHD. She has been doing so great with it as well and I have appreciated the repetition. We hit that EXACT part though, midway through Math 1, where she is expected to have memorized the math facts. I appreciated this video! We won't be switching but instead just adding in skip counting songs (Classical Conversations has great ones) and I will allow her to have a chart with all the math facts listed out so she can just pull from that. Wish us luck!

We have done all.thiae maths except GB. I'm working through Dianne Craft OT with my kiddo and using MUS to master certain skills.
  • I really think you should look into Shiller Math.. Montessori inspired, doesn’t focus on math facts, conceptual math that goes from concrete and builds to abstract.. I just ordered it for my family.

If you end up looking for another, I can't recommend Right Start highly enough for my kiddo who had discalculia/disgraphia! We've found a treatment program that she doesn't struggle with those anymore, but for grades 2 and 3 Right Start was a Godsend.

OMGOSH you are describing my 9 yr old girl to a T!! I am so frustrated with the virtual learning going on right now. She cannot do the complete online schooling so I'm about to transition her to homeschool....during all this, I have realized that she isnt getting what she needs at school. I appreciate all your good information in this video!!!

Definitely pay close attention to the Teachers Guide for 1 A&B.. it's highly recommended to teach the true "Singapore method". Some of the explanations go into way more detail in the Teacher's Guide (especially on problems such as "13 - 7" where the ones being taken away are greater). I hope it works out well! We do the Standards edition and it's going really well.
  • I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has been through a lot of math curriculum! We’ve done a lot and still haven’t found our groove. It’s tears every day ! I despair sometimes

We have been using Dianne Craft this year and it has shown great improvement for my kiddo. Its right brain integration therapy at home. It helps cross the midline and other therapy to help the brain communicate from one side to the other.
  • How you describe your son is sooooo similar to my child. He has really bad adhd, sensory issues, flips letters and numbers (not diagnosed but suspect something going on there) and he forgets what he just learned 2 mins later. He’s got type 1 diabetes as well and blood sugar variations can effect focus and attention span. During his remote learning the last 4 months of school from the pandemic I saw firsthand how he struggles. It almost broke us with the struggle. Long story short I am thinking about homeschooling him to help slow things down and get him learning how he needs to learn, and I really appreciate your video. Any update on which math curriculum your son has been most successful with? Math is my main concern.

As a middle school math coach and tutor, I emphasize mental math and daily mental math practice routines with my students, whom I teach individually through zoom sessions. I believe that there are ways to progressively strengthen the mental visualization of numbers and their basic mathematical operations, using progressive daily practice. US schools are fighting a culture of distraction and frivolity, and also many methods used in the U.S. have too many topics covered without any skill building or depth. Engagement is crucial, as there is no actual learning without it.
