Grandpa Jergal basically just stole custody over their grandkid from their worthless disappointment of a son Bhaal.
-
withers really turned up and said "no faith, no gods, no bitches, no afterlife, i will not stand for it"
-
I love that Withers/Jergal's reasoning is basically "If my successors are going to directly interfere in the affairs of mankind, then it's only fitting I'm allowed the same"
-
I love how the game tells you time and time again who he truly is, but never the direct answer. He can revive the dead at will if he wants, is a intelligent undead with divine powers, is a scribe of the dead, he awakens inside a temple of a forgotten god, and even speaks Old English. Jergal, you son of a bitch
-
Accept Bhaal: You become his meat puppet after the Brain is dead. Reject Bhaal: You get adopted by Jergal, named his chosen, possibly become immortal, Uncle Minsc and Auntie Jaheira are proud of you. I know everybody has different priorities but for me personally it's a rather easy choice.

"Thank you, Bone Man, for being nice."
-
Fun Fact for the first Withers encounter, aka how I knew he was absolutely Jergal before this reveal. If you play a cleric of Kelemvor (current God of Death and all around pretty chill dude himself in the lore), you get special dialogue options when meeting Withers the first time. I don't remember exactly what it is, but it's along the lines of "I feel like i know you." To which he replies, "You kinda do." Paraphrased, obviously.

I kinda wish Larian had leaned into the fake out. Narrator continues and the credits start to roll - only to have them suddenly interrupted by our boy Withers.
-
For those who haven't read the books throughout the game, Withers is almost 100% guaranteed to be Jergal, the god of the dead. He conceded his throne to the dead three (Bhaal, Myrul, and Bane)
-
Remember folks: the dwarf giant space hamster didn't doubt you for a second, so make sure you never let him down.
-
He may look like a bag of bones, but Withers, aka Grandpa Jergal is the best character watching over The Dark Urge.
-
It really seems that The Dark Urge was meant to be the canon playthrough, as it has so many unique encounters and story variations.
-
Although not said, I can easily imagine Jaheira and Minsc being proud of seeing the heart and legacy of a good-aligned Charname and Imoen live on in the redeemed Dark Urge.
-
And here, we watched Bhaal’s child become Jergal’s Chosen 🖤
-
That line at the end "Nature's servant awaits" hit me in the core memory HARD.
-
Withers is a badass, very well thought out character, this game never ceases to impress.
-
I just realized that The Dark Urge is very different from the common Bhaalspawn. Unlike Gorion's Ward, the main character of the first two games, The Dark Urge wasn't made by Bhaal knocking up a female of The Dark Urge's race, he/she is directly created from Bhaal's blood (which explains why Gorion's Ward had nightmares tempting him/her to give in to the instinct to murder, but never had the powerful impulses The Dark Urge had). And the fact that the default Dark Urge is an albino dragonborn is very interesting, there were no dragonborn on Faerun or anywhere else on Toril before Bhaal's death during the Time of Troubles, they were still in Abeir until the Spellplague happened 15 years later after Baldur's Gate 2 Throne of Bhaal.

I love the "Nature's servant awaits" reference at the end...

what a brilliant way to incorporate character respecs into the story
