Machinegun Shoot 2008, Redwing, MN Part 2: Auto-Destruction!

Published 2009-01-13
Second Annual Machinegun and Rifle Shoot 2008. All the shooters examine what bullets and tannerite do to a 1985 Volvo. Cars don't blow up like they do in Hollywood movies without a little help.

  • I loved it when you blew the car apart with the SKS and said "One shot, One kill!". That still has me laughing, Matt.

That's right 600 - 620 per minute. That's what the safety switch is for. That's mg 42. Someone found three of those in the cellar of a demolished building. Apparently they had been collected by an old WWII veteran, who was long time dead.
  • It is a vet bringback, it is original, and obviously it works. And yeah, it did cost a fortune, but I worked it off. And you know, it was WORTH IT.
  • No sneaking was necessary. Such guns were imported as war trophies with "bringback" papers issued to allow the transportation into the US. Most were later registered with the ATF when the laws changed to require registration.
  • The former owner was a collector who passed away, and friend of his helped the fellow's wife out by selling the gun collection. This gun cost me $20,000, and is worth twoce that now.

The German Army still uses the MG-3 which is, for all intents and purposes, a copy of the MG42 chambered in 7.62x51 NATO from 8mm Mauser with a few minor improvements in terms of weight and buffering. So yeah, you pretty much are *still* using this weapon in combat in Afghanistan.

The Sturmgewehr is expensive, but it's not that expensive. They're about as much as a well used Mercedes Benz or BMW. The MG42 is I think more like $30,000 to 40,000 at today's going rate. Please correct me if I'm wrong, Kurt.

My father has shot with such an MG during his service time, but with a post war version of the MG42 in cal .308
  • I know one fellow who has an FG-42, and he's been collecting for a few decades. Nice fellow too. You relaly don't shoot a gun that is THAT expensive. (hell, I'd to it though!)
  • @fullchoke001 That would be my buddy Ed. He retired as Principal and has a very nice collection of militaria.

That may be so in Canada. But here in America, we have Amendments to the Constitution. Specifically, the 1st and 4th Amendments to privacy and freedom of speech apply to the display of these items. Theoretically speaking, if I had a 50 foot flagpole with a National Socialist flag or the Soviet flag displayed in my front yard, nobody can legally do anything about it. And that's the way, IMHO, that it should be in the United States. If anyone asks you to take it down you can say "get bent."
