‘Educated' Author Tara Westover Shares How She Overcame A Sheltered Upbringing

Published 2022-08-29
Originally aired 2/8/2022. Westover, who was raised by survivalist parents in the mountains of Idaho, didn’t step foot in a classroom until she was 17 years old. Despite her unorthodox introduction to higher learning, Westover went on to write the bestselling memoir “Educated,” sharing her experiences of shedding what she had been taught growing up. She sits down with TODAY's Jenna Bush Hager to talk about how her life has changed since releasing the memoir.

Leave it to a morning show to sugarcoat how harsh but incredible that book is.

I just finished the book today... I couldn't put it down. What Tara Westover went through growing up in a "tough" family life is hard for some people to understand, but she fought through those barriers to become who she is, and that is what the definition of "tough" is.

EXTRAORDINARY book! it speaks to those who leave the security and comfort of family and friends (and the devil/dogma you know!) to explore the world without blinders.

I thank you for sharing your experience. Mss Tara I wish you write about estrangement as so many of us goes trough it painfully in silence.

I'm on the last 5 or 6 pages of this book and it is... I'm not sure I can find the word. It is almost otherworldly and powerful. This woman is more than tough as nails. She's as tough as a braided steel cable which is the only analogy I can think of. She has a drive in her to learn AND NOT deny her drive to learn but also to not be frightened by the truth. I think this woman is magnificent.

I am almost finished reading her book and have to say what a great read. I had a hard time putting it down. It's surprising to realize when you become an adult and reflect back to what you thought was a normal family because that's all you knew and the journey that ensues to discovering yourself is a very real reality for a lot of people. Tara is to be admired and encouraged as she continues her journey to discover herself.
  • How do you get into those universities without an education
  • @Elya_Dj
Don't the Mormons have their universities in Idaho? 🖐

Very sad. You have to write this book, instead of have peace and forgiveness towards your parents, and vice versa.
