A couple of quick tips to improving your cursive handwriting -- which seems to be something almost everyone wants to do after they get their first fountain pen.

The pen I'm writing with is a Pilot Metropolitan with a Fine nib.

The writing style is something I derived from one commonly used in the age of dip pens -- when it was important, if not imperative, to be legible since it was your only option. I call it CJ Roundhand.

Here's a video I (finally) made about it:

  • I was one of the "smart" kids in science class. I used to write all my notes in cursive so that nobody could ask for my notes to borrow. And my plan went perfectly all throughout that class.

My dream is to write a novel, in longhand, in beautiful cursive. It may never get published but the mere act will be satisfying.

I started practicing my handwriting during highschool out of nowhere because it soothed my anxiety. When I was 18, while working at a store, an elderly men got very surprised and complimented my cursive handwriting with "you just don't see it like that anymore". Then it struck me that I'd unconsciously development a skill, and such diligence and care is actually appreciated. Today I study chinese calligraphy as well, very fun.

Since your video 9 years ago, I practiced my cursive handwriting every day. And I'm now at the point that writing a very neat cursive handwriting comes natural. Instead of making me stop practicing, I noticed that it made me even want to write more. So I started practice with a dip pen.

im 19 years old and my handwriting looks like a 5 year old :'(
  • Well , i am indian. Here parents and teachers start encouraging the kids to improve writing from a very early age. I remember, when i was 7 years old one my uncle gifted me a kind of pen which was made of stick. he carved it himself and a pot of ink. He told me from now you will practice with this. I was very excited about this because it was like writing with feather of bird in old times ( old scriptures are written like this). Then i got fountain pen...i was very specific about my pens...sometime i used to modify the nib of my pens. it was really fascinating. and i was the only one in the class who wrote with fountain pen in school and the college. Still i have my favourite pens which i carved and modified in my teenage. Sorry for long note. but i can't help when it comes to handwriting or fountain pens. i really get excited. 😂🙂🙂

One day while visiting a farm way out in the countryside, I dropped my notebook just outside of the henhouse. Half a dozen chickens wandered over and immediately started reading my lectures notes.
  • i was forced to learn cursive in grades 4 & 5. i absolutely hated it because it seemed so mundane & useless to me. it was hard to read & hard to write. as i’ve aged, i’ve become thankful that i was taught. it’s a lot faster to scribble in cursive during college classes & a plus is that no one pesters you to take a photo of your notes. my boyfriend bought me a beautiful journal & fountain pen as an early birthday present. it came in today & i found myself watching this video. it only confirmed what i knew i had to do anyways; practice. my cursive is scratchy & messy. it is riddled with extra loops & lines due to a habit of writing too quickly. my hands are always very shaky, so i must learn to not fight but incorporate the trembling somehow. good luck to everyone who is practicing!
