Paul Gilbert - The original plan was for me to guest with Albert Collins at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in Germany, where he was the headliner. I was just supposed to do a solo exchange at the end. I wasn't the main act at all. But he got sick and cancelled the show. It was a last-minute decision, and everyone involved was in trouble. "He's not coming. What do we do?" And they said, "Paul, you're going to play!" I didn't know what to do, because I was alone and I didn't have my band with me. But there was a rhythm section. They were actually the drummer (Rick Lee) and bassist (Leo Lyons) from the legendary band Ten Years After. Albert Lee was playing at the festival, and he said, "If you need a band, you can use them." The show was in five hours and we were unprepared! So I said, "Well, pick five easy Jimi Hendrix songs and we had to get through the set. I'll play a very long solo. I'll play loud and fast for two or three minutes, then quiet for another two or three minutes, then loud again at the end. That way, each song will be about 9 minutes long. If you do that for five songs, you can do the set. And we did it. It was recorded, everybody liked it, and we said, "Well, let's release it as an album!" But there was a lot of pressure on me to release Tribute To Jimi Hendrix. Normally it would take me three years to make a great album for Jimi! But that was just an hour of rehearsal and 45 minutes on stage with no preparation. I just did the best I could at the time.

I like this. I don't expect to hear hendrix. I expect to see PG play hendrix. so if you complain about his playing not suiting hendrix's songs, you can just simply listen to hendrix.

I hate when people comes to a video to start hating "Govan is better than Gilbert", guys, both are awesome persons, I met both in the same place, THIS IS MUSIC !! NOT A COMPETITION !! EACH ONE HAS HIS STYLE !!

I’ve heard that Paul has been asked last minute to play n this festival. When he heard it was a jazz festival he said “I don’t play a lot of jazz” but then decided to play some Hendrix songs in a “jazz” style version. Considering he only had about 48 hours to prepare for this concert this is absolutely crazy.

I don't recall any guitarist doing something like that for a live, playing a 45 mins set of Hendrix stuff, like it or not you need to have gigantic balls to present this thing on a big music festival, so much respect for Gilbert, amazing playing, he just never tried to play like Hendrix here and that's why I think it's amazing
  • Number 1 rock guitarist in the world. He can play anything.I like him giving simple guitar lesson. He is humble.I listen to great guitarist like Steve vai but non compare like him. He's the best.

My Uncle Has This Cassette Record Back In 2000 Or Maybe 2002, I Raid This And Listened To It, I Got Shocked After Hearing All This Solos, I Thought "OH MY GOD" HOW CAN ANYONE PLAY SUCH A GOOD AMAZING SOLO IMPROVISING EVERY SINGLE NOTES OVER HENDRIX..  THIS IS AWESOME... STILL HEARING IT...
  • I imagine Guthrie and Paul watching this video together, enjoying the blues, while here everyone is arguing about who is better ... just enjoy!

Needless to say about the playing but his singing was so good too

Que talento, que maestro, y esto paso hace 20 años, y ya tenía esa maestria para tocar blues de manera exquisita.y virtuosa. Tremendo lo de Paul, si no es mi violero favorito pasa raspando. Idolo!

I remember reading an interview where Paul talked about this. It was really last minute and they really didn't have much time to prepare. That's why they only played 5 songs. He said they just picked some Hendrix songs to fill the space and he played every single note, lick and run he knew.Â
