I would like to thank everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon ( www.patreon.com/smartereveryday ). You're making all of our supersonic baseball data dreams come true. I have some very interesting things planned for the cannon, and I'm excited to share it. If you'd like to consider supporting on Patreon as well, I'd love to send you a baseball. If you've been a supporter for a while now, I have a little thank you headed your way in the near future (still working out the logistics). Thank you for sticking with me. The fact that you've decided to not only support, but to stick with me is huge.

The amount of equipment out there to produce this video is utterly insane. I think you can judge the complexity of a shoot by how many E-Z ups you have to use.

"MATLAB is cool but have you done plywood?" That setence should be in everery single engineering bookl in the world

You know it's serious when the cameras have umbrella. Merry Christmas SED crew!
  • The fact he was so happy about a caterpillar that he forgot about the baseball cannon is heartwarming. It is quite the beautiful caterpillar, and I'm glad he saved it. No hurting wildlife team!

“That’s my pen…” As a nurse, I felt the emotion in that sentence, in the bottom of my soul.
  • If someone loves you as much as that dude loves his pen, you've made it.
  • That caterpillar is from a Gulf Fritillary butterfly! I used to gather these from my grandma’s backyard in Southern California. One of their favorite host plants is the passion fruit vine. The combination of watching their life cycle and learning about the symbolic nature of the Passion flower made for a great childhood memory.
  • One of my new all-time favorite YT videos! I can't even imagine trying to set this video up and filming it.

Excellent demonstration of newtons impact penetration law.

Forget the smooth creamy taste of Ken's extra-heavy mayonnaise, I need to know what kind of pen that is. It's clearly a unit of superior quality, in order to be so beloved by all who come in contact with it.
  • You know you're doing something absolutely crazy when the Y axis on one of your graphs has "Mach 1" and "Mach 2" as labels!
  • @zollotech
This was great. Didn’t expect to see the cannon again and glad someone finally answered the important question of what happens when you hit mayonnaise at over 1000mph. 😀

"I'd love to send you a baseball" Um, just how fast shipping are we talking about? Should I be wearing body armor?
  • I would love to see a high speed thermal image of the impacts, either on the steel plate or on the sprinkles. The energy of that ball is significantly being dissipated as heat, and it would be fascinating to see where it goes and at what rate it decays.

WOW! We are a homeschooling family currently with a 6th, 4th, 3rd and K students. My brother suggested we check you all out and it was a wise idea!!! We all really enjoyed this. My 5 year old boy said after the Mayo mess, "I wonder how long that took to clean up!!" Keep up the fun interesting way of sharing your love of Science to the world! Blessings!
  • @SuperfastMatt
A supersonic baseball hitting a gallon of mayonnaise is amusing, but making it amusing for 28 minutes is a heroic feat of YouTubery. This is a truly great channel.
  • @Smithelwerb
"We Dieseled mayonnaise" Add that to the list of brand new sentences that have 100% never been spoken before today. I just about choked to death on my water when Destin said that!
  • Destin, I wanted to thank you. I am currently and hopefully maintain the upswing from a serious health issue. Your videos have definitely meant the world to me. They are able to take my brain off of life and into your videos. A few questions though, are you using a Nitrogen cascade for gas for the confettie maker or just compressed air/atmosphere. And you guys made your backstop into something Jackson Pollock would find interesting. :) Keep on keeping on bud!
