Picking a puppy for protection dog sports can be a tough task, so I thought I'd ask my friends Peter & Connie Scherk - people I consider experts on the topic. This short video is a clip from Episode 124, here's the link:

Malinois puppies in particular are a very interesting breed and people make big mistakes in selecting the wrong dogs. The NUMBER ONE thing you want is a nice, friendly dog. You'll hear this said over and over again. Also, find a VERY GOOD breeder, not some backyard breeder.

Pick a PUPPY THAT YOU'RE GONNA KEEP FOR LIFE!

My respect to anyone who takes in a pup and commits themselves to caring for that dog for life. Too many people don’t seem to understand the bond that a dog develops towards their owner. I couldn’t imagine parting with my dog. It would devastate me.

I bought an 8 weeks old Belgian Malinois from a professional breeder and she picked out the puppy for me. She breeds working line dogs for the military and police. She had to interview me to make sure I would be able and willing to take care of her pup before she made the sale. I must say, she picked out the kind of puppy I wanted. I wanted a dog with high drive, one that would make a good protection dog. And that’s exactly what I got! Now he’s one years old, and he is still in professional training, and doing well. I must admit, this is the first dog of this caliber I have ever had, and he gives me a run for the money!

Congratulations on 300 000 subscribers Robert! Way to go! Love the work you do. I have a really well behaved lab because of your videos and videos from other balanced trainers. As someone who lives in a country where e-collars and prong-collars are illegal (Sweden), your philosophy is really suited for me.

Human or canine, to just abandon them for not reaching your expectations would be Low, very low
